Installing pygamman_f2py on macOS Catalina

Issue: The latest versions of macOS and gcc have changed where the C compiler (gcc) looks for header files during compilation of code. As a result, I had to use an adapted installation procedure.

  1. Download pygamman_f2py and unzip into a folder
  2. cd into folder containing pygamman_f2py files and executables
  3. Make sure xcode is installed with xcode-select --install
  4. Run make clean (first install code to build python wrapper)
  5. Tell the macOS to use clang C compiler instead of gcc and run install command with CC=clang CXX=clang++ make (second and adapted install code to build python wrapper). This command temporarily sets your default environment to say "my C Compiler is clang and my C++ [CXX] compiler is clang++" for one command.
  6. Test the installation with python neutral_density_test.py

This solution worked for macOS Catalina 10.15.7, Xcode 12.4, gcc 4.8.5, Python 3.8.5
