codebender's Issues

add material on prioritization

Prioritisation:

  • Does the topic interest me?
  • Is the data available, or do I have the infrastructure and support to capture it myself?
  • Are there people with relevant experience that I trust, who I can bounce this topic off for feedback?
  • Shorter term: can I get paid to do this?
  • Longer term: is this likely to look good when putting in my first/next funding application
  • Will this allow me to disseminate my work in the journals / conferences I want to target?

Promotion:

  • Are the tools I need to use / build to work on this research topic likely to be useful to others in the field?
  • If so, can I find someone else in the field to also champion them?
  • And after that, can I put in to run a (ideally paid) tutorial at a major conference with that person?
  • And if I do that, is it more likely that I’ll get invited on to a panel?

What doesn’t work:

  • Chasing the money. Funding trends are set months and years ahead. If you’re chasing the money, you’re up against people who’ve invested time in getting a track record in the hot new funding topic. Pick a sub-field that excites you and work with others to fight for more money for it.
  • Doing things alone. Research is still, in most fields, about who you know and who knows you. Listen to people and be interested in their research.
