This has been changed due to http://sourceforge.net/p/nagstamon/bugs/83/. Because your use case seems to be very special I would not consider to revert that changes that seem to work at all other places. But it is not to complicated to build yourself an own version with just one line changed. On what platform do you run Nagstamon?
from nagstamon.
Windows and linux, across multiple machines. Running a custom version for this regression is just silly... can you please make this an option that defaults to the new behaviour, but allows people to revert to the old if required? I am not the only person that requires this, I know of several data centres in AU that this change has prevented them from upgrading Nagstamon.

Interesting... I did not expect this being such a problem. Adding such an option shouldn't be that hard. I will check this. If you want to check if it would work you could modify line 167 in Nagstamon/Server/Icinga.py for Icinga server 1.7+

Please check the binaries at https://nagstamon.ifw-dresden.de/files-nagstamon/unstable/. You will find a "Use display name as hostname" checkbox at the bottom of your server setup dialog when it is of type Icinga. Please let me know if it works now for you.

Works great except for the same change is also needed for service names. Thank you for fixing this.
