Problems opening projects with 3.24 QGIS

I have no idea why I can not open any previous projects (3.18 and older) on either the 3.22 or 3.24 versions of QGIS.
Previous projects are stored on a WD Elements external 16TB disk and have no problem opening them again. On 3.22 and 3.24 it starts to load but then states project loaded and there are no layers to be seen. Can someone give me an idea as to what is going wrong?
