What I tried:
I tried to modify default.nix by changing the arguments to

So it seems, I need to inject a variable "cabal" that has mkDerivation defined. Unfortunately, I do not know enough about nix yet to do that.

merge into nixpkgs

I am currently building and maintaining Idris packages for NixOS in nixpkgs. We've got some documentation over there on writing nix-expressions for Idris, and functions that make it easier. What say we combine efforts?

Can’t query status.

OS X doesn’t seem to like ${glibcLocales}.

Haskell and NixOS

Nice work! But please note, that in some time cabal.mkDerivation is going to be deprecated in NixOS, because there is a new generation of haskell pkgs managing called haskellng.
