UC Merced Research Process Tutorial

This tutorial is based on a tutorial hosted at the [UC Irvine Libraries] (http://www.lib.uci.edu/uc-research-tutorial/begin.html). UC Merced Library staff have transferred the tutorial content to Drupal. Primary changes have included converting much of the content from Flash to HTML5, using CSS to format content display, and including quizzes for each module from which participation rates and scores can be recorded and retrieved.

INSTALLATION

  1. Download [Drupal 6] (http://drupal.org/project/drupal).
  1. Unarchive the Drupal 6 package to your web server.
  2. Create a blank database for the Drupal installation.
  3. Import the ucm-rpt.sql into the database.
  4. Update the database information in sites/default/settings.php
  5. Clone this repository into your Drupal 6 root directory: $ git clone https://github.com/ucmlibrary/ucm-rpt.git /path/to/drupal6.
  1. Browse to http://yoursite.tld/user/.
  • Username is rptadmin. Change the username if desired.
  • Password is ChangeMePlease!. Change the password.

CUSTOMIZATON

  • THEME. We are using a customized version of the Minelli theme. The CSS files are located in sites/all/themes/ucmrpt-fluid/ucmrpt-fixed/.
  • HEADER LINKS. The links to the different libraries are in the headers are in a custom HTML block at http://yoursite.tld/admin/build/block/configure/block/1. Admin login is required.
  • SECTION LINKS. The links for the main sections are in the same block as the Header links.
  • SUBSECTION LINKS. The links for the different subsections are found at http://yoursite.tld/admin/build/menu under the each main section.
  • QUIZ LINKS. The links to the quizzes are in the menu labled "Quizzes."
  • FOOTER LINKS. The links at the bottom of pages are located in the block named "Navigation for bottom of RPT pages."
  • SOCIAL LINKS. The Facebook, Google+, and Twitter buttons are located in the same block as the footer links.
  • FEEDBACK LINK. The feedback link uses the [Feedback module] (http://drupal.org/project/feedback). Feedback messages are recorded at http://yoursite.tld/admin/reports/feedback.

TUTORIAL PAGES

The pages of the tutorial can be found at http://yoursite.tld/admin/content/node by setting the type to 'Page.' The category filter may also be used to display the RPT Section you want by selecting the Section title from the bottom of the list of the options. Click the 'edit' link at the end of the row of the page you want to edit.

  • To add a page to an existing section, go to http://yoursite.tld/node/add/page.
  1. Enter a title.
  2. Select a section from the "RPT Sections" box.
  3. Enter the content in the "Body" box.
  4. In the 'URL path settings' box, enter the alias you want to use for this page.
  • For example: begin_20.
  1. Click 'Save' when done.
  • To create a new section, go to http://yoursite.tld/admin/content/taxonomy/2/add/term.
  1. Enter the new section title in the 'Term name' box.
  2. Enter the description in the 'Description' box.
  3. Follow the steps above to add pages to the section.

QUIZZES

We are using the [Quiz Module] (http://drupal.org/project/quiz) for the quizzes. Each section has multiple quiz questions, which are randomly selected from designated pools.

  1. Set the type to 'Quiz' to see all the existing quizzes.
  2. To the type to 'Multiple choice question' to see the individual quiz questions.
  • We only 'Multiple choice question' for all questions, even the true/false ones.
  1. Click 'edit' at the end of the row to edit the question.
  • To add a quiz to an existing section, go to http://yoursite.tld/node/add/quiz.
  1. Enter a title.
  2. Select a section from the "RPT Sections" box.
  3. Enter the description in the "Description" box.
  4. Expand the 'Pass/fail' and 'Taking' options and enter information as needed.
  5. In the 'URL path settings' box, enter the alias you want to use for this page.
  6. Click 'Save' when done.
