xengt-preview-xen's Issues

Add support for Windows VM?!

Hi I'm no expert on VM but have some suggestions/questions to the project:

  1. I see on presentation you say no IHV has tried to use SR-IOV but then what technology uses Nvidia in his Kepler cards that it calls they support true HW GPU virtualization and having support only right now on Citrix platform.. is SR-IOV or similar to yours?
  2. for me the most important use of it is if you can support Windows as guest.. my recomendation is that you should work with Intel Windows graphics driver team so that we can apply this model to Windows guest machines also.. that would be awesome..
  3. do you expect some serious issues if testing say with latest ubuntu releases like 13.10 or upcoming 14.04 beta?
  4. Currently is Haswell graphics but I assume from that all Intel processors will be supported like Broadwell, right?
  5. You said in september code drop in xengt setup guide had experimental HW video decode accel support.. "HW-accelerated Video Playback Preliminary Supported" but now I can't see that in the february guide.. has it support been removed?
also you don't say if also we can access HW accel video encoding via libva Intel driver also or even if it's compatible with new Intel Media SDK for Linux which leverages that.. can you answer that?
  6. also OpenCL on Intel GPUs for Linux platforms is coming via beignet project.. can also expect support for that? or it is already supported?

Support for gHyvi shown in USENIX ATC 2015 paper

Hi,
I was reading USENIX paper "Boosting GPU Virtualization Performance with Hybrid Shadow Page Tables" made by Intel employes..
I see: "gHyvi significantly improves gVirt’s performance for memory-intensive GPU workloads. Evaluation using GMedia shows that gHyvi can achieve up to 13x performance improvement compared to gVirt, and up to 85% native performance for multithread media transcoding."
In the paper is said code will be pushed to github eventually?
Any info to share on ETA?
Thanks..

Suggest a better format for installation doc

At least for evince on Ubuntu, if you copy and paste the commands, the character "-" would be messed up, causing a lot of errors.

That is actually pretty minor.
Anyway, the main reason for me being here is that I'm toying with the idea of running this on my Macbook Pro Retina late'13 (11,1), and I can't find a better place for questions like mailing list/forum/IRC.

Obviously using your stock config it won't boot, not even any display, so please spare some time to answer a few questions:

From the vague system requirement, it seems it would work? Since I'm still trying to figure out the correct kernel config, I'd love to know if it's worth trying in the first place.

Do you have any suggestion for the bare minimum config so I can at least get some console output just to figure out why it's failing?

Thanks mate.

Expose support for Intel GVT tech for MacOS (running Win or Lin VM under MacOS)?

Hi,
I know that may sound crazy but can we expect some support to Intel GVT on MacOS..
Ideally, for me at least, the solution I want would be to have GPU acceleration on Windows or Linux virtual machines running under MacOSX using a virtualization consumer product like VirtualBox (or Vmware Player)..
Could also be in theory running GPU accelerated MacOSX virtual machines under Windows (but these are is not officialy supported only hacks: http://www.sysprobs.com/guide-install-os-x-10-9-mavericks-on-vmware-workstation-with-windows-7-or-windows-8)..
Also other "hack" way could be as you seem to be working on support for KVM (KVMgt) and I see also KVM for OSX hacks are there (http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~somlo/OSXKVM/) so perhaps is possible this way too.. don't know if somehow that requires Mac Intel GPU drivers to be modified to support Intel GVT similar to support for Windows was added needing new Intel GPU Windows drivers ..
Also don't know if these can help in bringing some Intel GVT tech to MacOS but seems 10.10 adds:
"Hypervisor (Hypervisor.framework). The Hypervisor framework allows virtualization vendors to build virtualization solutions on top of OS X without needing to deploy third-party kernel extensions (KEXTs). Included is a lightweight hypervisor that enables virtualization of the host CPUs."
thanks..

Flickers

At times the display flickers. It seems to happen randomnly, or at least I couldn't figure out the cause and effect.

KVM support

This project seems to target only XEN. As KVM is also used often by oss people, I'd like to see KVM support.
How much work would it be to port the XEN changes to KVM?
As the current work is mostly done by dom0, I think it should be possible to support KVM without huge redesigns.

Is there any roadmap for KVM support?

Do you think the client driver has to be touched for KVM support?

Skylake support ETA..

Hi, seems Skylake is coming in a month i.e.early August.. How far are we from seeing support in XenGT? I.e. Some ETA?

dmesg errors during host boot

I installed xengt on manjaro (ArchLinux). However, Windows 7 fails to boot after installing the intel driver (it just stays in the bootup screen).
If I set vgt=0 I actually see the HD4600 in the device manager.
I have a Core i7-4700HQ processor.

No enough available aperture/gm/fence

Hi

I'd like to start 3 windows 8 VMs and when first is up and running second won't pass. I get an error:

vGT info:(create_vgt_instance:120) vm_id=11, low_gm_sz=128MB, high_gm_sz=384MB, fence_sz=4, vgt_primary=1
vGT: create_vgt_instance: no enough available aperture/gm/fence!

CPU is i7-4790K with aperture size set in BIOS at 512MB. Auto won't help either.
I tried also on Gigabyte Brix with i7-4770R, Iris Pro graphics, fixed size 64MB aperture and problem is the same.

What does it mean and where is the problem ?

Thanks.

DormU detects 'Cirrus Logic GD5446' instead of Intel(R) Iris Pro Graphics 5200 (0D22) #19

HW is haswll, graphic is Iris Pro Graphics 5200

Following setup guide pdf , Dorm0 detects Intel(R) Iris Pro Graphics 5200 (0D22) and working fine.
DormU detects Cirrus Logic GD5446, not Iris Pro Graphics 5200 pass-through. It seems that passthrough not working but dmesg looks fine.

Any idea of whatI should debug or check? (I am new user of xen, any info is appreciated)

PS>I guess developer insert some msgs to tell if vga chip detected, working fine, etc. This kind of info is helpful

fail windows8

I have tried to operating Windows 8.1 with XenGT.
I was following the XenGT Setup Guide (July 15, 2014).
But I failed both Windows8.1 32bit / with 64bit Windows7 32bit.

When you install the driver,
Windows show "page_fault_in_nonpaged_area" error during installation,
and VM was forced to terminate.

But ubuntu (14.04 amd64) is works very well.

I was tested on Dell Optiplex 7010 (i7-3770, HD4000, 8GB Memory).
Host is Ubuntu 14.04 and Unity Desktop is not used.

Configuration(such as vgt_low_vm_sz, vgt_high_gm_sz) is same Setup Guide.
and I use direct display mode.
Windows driver is 15.33.22.3621.

Warnings on xl create

On 'xl create' following warnings appear if my .hvm file is set corresponding to the manual:
WARNING: specifying "tsc_mode" as an integer is deprecated. Please use the named parameter variant. e.g. tsc_mode="default"
WARNING: ignoring "kernel" directive for HVM guest. Use "firmware_override" instead if you really want a non-default firmware

Should I set it to
firmware_override = 'hvmloader'
tsc_mode=default
? If yes, I think the manual should be updated accordingly.

Texture broken in webgl

I installed xengt on my IvyBridge PC and encounter this trouble.

In my Linux DomU, if I run webgl acuarium (https://webglsamples.googlecode.com/hg/aquarium/aquarium.html),
the textures all all broken.

I'm not sure if it is because I'm using IvyBridge or a possible bug in xenGT.
If it is due to I'm using IvyBridge, I would like to purchase Haswell PC.

BTW, is this kind of trouble can happen in xenGT in theory?
I expect there shouldn't be such trouble because xenGT is basically based on pass-through.

Unable to connect to xenbits.xen.org, is there another way?

In the project, Intel GVT-g(XenGT) Pubic Release - Q1'2015, XenGT_Setup_Guide.pdf, chapter 3.3, Building Xen and Qemu.

In ubuntu 14.04 LTS, Use that two command:

git clone git://xenbits.xen.org/xen.git xen-vgt

git clone git://git.qemu-project.org/qemu.git qemu-xen

It always return:

正克隆到 'xen-vgt'...
fatal: unable to connect to xenbits.xen.org:
xenbits.xen.org[0: 50.57.170.242]: errno=连接超时
and
正克隆到 'qemu-xen'...
fatal: unable to connect to git.qemu-project.org:
git.qemu-project.org[0: 140.211.15.109]: errno=连接超时

Maybe the issue is in my network. So I have been down xen and qemu by http.

But when I do the command:

make -j8 xen tools

It will update from "xenbits git server", and also time out. So is there another way, I can download some package by myself, not auto. And then I can make it successful.

Support for / integration with Qubes OS?

Hi!
Not sure if it's the right place to ask, but do you plan any integration with / support for QubesOS (https://www.qubes-os.org/)?

As far as Xen projects go, it's one of the most fascinating, but GPU virtualization is sorely lacking there, and it appears the project itself doesn't have the resources to test and/or integrate XenGT in their Xen setup https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/qubes-users/DtdQA2p20wM

It would be extremely useful if GPU virtualization was brought there, and would be awesome if Intel Open Source Technology Center dedicated some resources to this task.

Sincerely,
Sarah

Intel Core M support?

Hi seems Core M is around the corner..
can we expect timely support for this Broadwell CPU? also with Windows GPU drivers supporting XenGT on Windows? is that coming in October reléase cited in 01.org?
thanks

Mouse hangs

When I move the mouse cursor outside of the screen in the vm the mouse hangs a little bit until it moves again.

RAM on host is not freed

After the domU has been closed the memory is oftentimes not freed.
In my case have 32Gb RAM and after all VM have been destroyed I end up with 10Gb ram left until I reboot.

How to use Indirect Mode Display?

I have tried to enable Indirect Mode display in my haswell PC.
I have applyed kernel parameter(xen_vgt.propagate_monitor_to_guest=0) and use monitor.conf by following manual.
But I can't see vgt display

Do I miss something to enable Indirect Mode display?

I think the functions from i915_gem_vgtbuffer.c is the one to enable Indirect Mode Display, Am i right?

Please give some guides to enable the Mode.

Unclear which graphics cards are supported

I've read some conflicting reports as I've research this on Google. Are any graphics cards driven by i915 supported? Or just Iris Pros? Could this be made explicit somewhere?

3 Windows VM

Is it possible to run 3 Windows VM with XenGT? If yes, on which hardware?

I only have 256MB available aperture size. dom0 uses half of this. So i can only run 1 Windows VM.

Problems with indirect mode

The documentation of the indirect mode is quite hard for me to understand and/or the indirect mode does not work properly for me:

  • What are the advantages/disadavantages of direct/indirect mode? Do you need to use indirect mode for a multi montor setup, or is it also possible with direct mode?
  • The parameter vgt_monitor_config_file is apparently not working; I can set for example:
    vgt_monitor_config_file=’/path/to/nonexistent/file.config’
without an error message despite of having set xen_vgt.propagate_monitor_to_guest=0
  • The commands 1-4 to plug in the virtual display do not work for me (1+3 write error, 2+4 do not change the files' contents)
  • the contents of monitor.config are unclear for me:
    what is meant by

first bit 1 for text mode, and second bit 2 for number of ports in the config

    11
and are the EDIDs in monitor.config arbitrary?
  • How to get the EDID?
    using
    cat /sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-$_port_type-1/edid
gives me an EDID with special characters including linebreaks. How do you let them be interpreted as one piece by bash?

Mouse invisible on host

Whenever I put a domU with vgt=1 with the intel driver installed my mouse cursor becomes invisible on dom0. The mouse's icon becomes stuck on the last position. The mouse continues to work on host as expected but stays invisible until dom0 is set to foreground again.

Dom0 framebuffer still very slow (is it working?)

Hello,

I'm seeing a lot of warnings and things that look like errors (with !) in dmesg and the framebuffer is very slow. I'm using CentOS, the latest version.

My dmesg is the following:
