iota-experience-team's Introduction

IOTA Experience Team

The IOTA Experience Team is a high level team composed of community members and IOTA Foundation employees who focus on community-facing accessibility efforts surrounding IOTA technologies.

For more details read the [IOTA Experience Team Charter].

What is the vision behind the IOTA Experience Team exist?

Sustainable open source software is always, first and foremost, a community effort. By its very nature, the health of every project in this domain has as much to do with those consuming the code as it has to do with those maintaining it.

At the IOTA Foundation, we want to open up a feedback loop between our internal development teams and, you, the amazing people doing wonderful things with the protocol. By bringing some of the “real world” back into the development processes, the vision is to offer the opportunity for you to become intimately involved in preparing software for its transition from Alpha to a Full Release.

As a member of the IOTA Experience Team, you won’t be met with demands or endless formalities. By participating in this IOTA Experience Team, you will be empowered to speak as a voice for the community and guide development processes. And at the end of the day, you will have helped yourself, the IOTA Foundation and the whole community to more solid, intuitive, and useful technologies.

Contributing

code commits !== the only means to contributions.

The IOTA Experience Team is tasked with growing and sustaining the IOTA Community. If you're reading this, you're already a part of that community and we'd love to have your help!

Before you get started, here's a broad outline of the IOTA Experience Team's governance structure:

  • IOTA Experience Team: meta-level admin concerns, cross-cutting with other groups and Working Groups
    • Initiatives: focused on specific tasks, independent from the IOTA Experience Team but sharing what they're doing in IOTA Experience Team meetings.

As seen here, most of the community work that immediately affects the project is done within the numerous initiatives. We recommend checking the list of initiatives below and getting involved with one that you find interesting! If nothing suits your fancy and you have concrete ideas, open an issue here! We can help to point you in the right direction.

To get started with contributing, you should read the Contributing Guidelines document. This document details the roles you can take on. It also includes a guide to contributing and links to good first issues where we're looking for help.

If you're interested in participating in the IOTA Experience Team directly, you're more than welcome to join via the Jitsi link posted in our meeting issues.

Meetings

IOTA Experience Team meetings are broadcast via Jitsi. The join link is published in the meeting's respective issue. Meeting times are coordinated to optimize for contributor timezones.

Strategic Initiatives

Initiatives are projects that the IOTA Experience Team and the broader community members are collaborating on to enable IOTA across the ecosystem.

At any one time the IOTA Experience Team has a number of strategic initiatives underway. With the less-tangible approach to the work that the IOTA Experience Team does, having a way to track this work is important.

For each strategic initiative, the IOTA Experience Team's goal is to have a single point of reference - a champion - that understands what's happening with the initiative to the fullest extent possible, and can report on the initiative as needed.

A review of the initiatives will be a standing item on the IOTA Experience Team agenda (even if the update is 'nothing new') as a way to ensure they are active and have the support needed.

Labels for Issues and PRs

In an effort to be more concise and distribute our knowledge, we do our best to use labels on issues to give context on their status. Here's a guide to how we use labels:

  • initiative- prefix: Belonging to or about an initiative that follows the prefix.
  • waiting-on- prefix: This indicates that we're waiting on a group for input/feedback.
  • type- prefix: Denotes what kind of discussion is happening – a request, an open discussion, a problem, etc.
  • -agenda suffix: Denotes that an issue will be included in the agenda of the initiative or WG pririor to the suffix.
  • good-first-issue: Issues that are a good place to start contributing to the IOTA Experience Team
  • mentor-available: Issues that have a mentor available to help out

Governance and Current Members

The IOTA Experience Team is a team that collaborates alongside the IOTA Foundation. See the [IOTA Experience Team Charter] to learn more about the group's evolving structure and CONTRIBUTING.md for guidance about the expectations for all contributors to this project.

[GOAL] Create a website that lists VPS providers and hardware by their performance in the Tangle

Create a website that lists VPS providers and hardware by their performance in the Tangle

Priority: ()

We should have a list of VPS providers for beginners.
Only tested and approved providers could be added.
You could sort them by I/O, CPU benchmarks and price/performance.
We would need to implement benchmark tools in the node software. Hornet already has the bench-io tool to benchmark I/O.

I made a first draft for the website in this repo. Feel free to make PRs and suggestions.

Key results

  • Create and improve website that lists the prices and benchmarks of various providers
  • Add common Hardware configs (Intel Nuc)
  • Implement CPU benchmark in Hornet
  • Implement CPU benchmark in Bee
  • Implement I/O benchmark in Bee
  • Find a method to publish/verify results directly from the node software

IOTA Development Patterns

Goal Title

Priority: ()
There are already quite a lot use case description of what can be done with IOTA. What's missing is the intermediate description and patterns on how to actually solve more complex problems. The basic course about how to send/receive funds and data is very low level.
It would be great to have a set of patterns on how to tackle different task.

Key results

    • Set of basic development patterns
    • How can these pattern be combined to get to the next level

[PROPOSAL: Reputation tool] IOTA X-Teams and SourceCred

IOTA X-Teams and SourceCred

The IOTA Foundation launched the IOTA Experience Teams (X-Teams in short):

“IOTA Experience Teams are groups of dedicated community members that work together with IOTA Foundation members throughout different stages of development. IOTA Experience Teams strengthen collaboration with our passionate community and pave the road for IOTA to have the best developer experience in the DLT and IoT space.”

We intend to understand how various members of the IOTA community can and will influence IOTA Foundation’s projects and its ecosystem. Open source projects share many concepts and challenges and the beauty is that there are other projects out there building interesting ways to measure the value of community contributions and how to make open source sustainable.
During a chat with Daniel Thompson-Yvetot, he pointed to SourceCred’s reputation protocol and we wanted to discuss with our community, how it may benefit these endeavors.

Contributions and Reputation

One great challenge in open source is to understand the value of a contribution. How is it possible to understand the connection from a discussion on a forum, to a chat on Discord up to a pull request or issue on GitHub. SourceCred is a tool that assigns weights to contributions that helps the broader IOTA community and ecosystem to understand the context of proposals and initiatives.
X-Team members will have public hard data at their disposal that will show the importance of their contribution and subsequent work based on their contributions within the X-Team initiatives will grow their reputation and contribution value in the long term. New members of the community will also have the possibility to become an important part of the IOTA ecosystem through their contributions in order to gain trust, support and build their reputation.

SourceCred

SourceCred.io gathers data from different sources like GitHub, Discourse, Discord (WIP) to represent networks of actions with the CredRank algorithm explained here.

The CredRank algorithm is used to compute reputation scores. The intention of this PageRank-style algorithm is to calculate the relative value of contribution based on weights.

Test run

In the beginning a reputation leaderboard will be published to follow how contributions to GitHub repositories represent the X-Team member’s reputation. During this time it is possible to point out inconsistencies or make suggestions. As we go with the test run, we will define together how to improve effectiveness, like trying out different weights and their effect on the scores to finetune how contributions will construct the scores and the reputation.

Long term goal

Once it’s out of beta testing, SourceCred will support a system to calculate incentives of different kinds for the IOTA community members, the paths from here can follow different directions, most probably defined and built by the IOTA community itself.

Online Pair Programming Sessions

Priority: ()
The idea is to hold many pair programming sessions about anything code related.

  • Write new code
  • Explain existing code
  • Check a Pull Request
  • or oven discuss and plan an idea

This discussion about developers can bring a lot of experience to the whole team. With tools like VSCode Live Share, the remote. pair programmings is a cool experience right now.
These sessions could also be recorded or live sessions streamed to youtube. This could be interesting videos for all IOTA Developers.

[Experience] A personal story about distributed team consensus and efficiency

I wanted to share with you a story that might also be interesting to be read here,
would like to hear your feedback of this kind of concepts and if some ideas or concepts like this could possibly also help for X-Teams and our productivity working together with many people having different skills :)

einfachiota/rust-learning-group#10 (comment)

Daily mini updates of honest and realistic communication of progress, but also clearly speaking up if something is throttling you, or slowing down the generic progress, can work really well like magic - i support this kind of idea

i would like to share some personal, very impressive Experience i've had at business school that showed me the importance of smart handling projects together in a team can have insanely huge impacts. Also interesting for the X-Teams repos.

I remember from business school, i have been picked out of the class and been send 2 weeks to Campus in Viborg, Denmark, where the "Teacher" appeared ONE time on the first day, explained us scrum, told us the protocol, told us what we should have finished within 2 weeks from now.

Interesting part here was, that the Teacher just left the room and said - YOU guys together are the team, you guys have to finish this, i will not be there for questions, or any help the next two weeks. We thought, _no way, two weeks onlx, people from 7 different countries and nobody ever using Android SDK without a Teacher leading us daily, IMPOSSIBLE - everyone thought with Questionmarks in all of our heads.

This really innovative teacher was right and it worked. Simply by doing those mini updates from everyone in the morning, in a QUICKEST and honest rundown way possible, MAXIMUM 5 minutes for each participant, we SUCCEEDED! Just telling to the Team every morning:

  1. What progress been established the day before and if his Sprint can be on time
  2. highlighting potential issues for the projects goal to be finished in X days left,
  3. being honest if they are stuck, have blockades or do not have the skills to bring the need progress to that part of the App
  4. alternative tasks ideas where this person think he could get work done much faster, that are needed to be done anyways.

So we, the team, moved people that clearly were not great coders for example , out of that useless timewasting and just let the Team together reevaluate quickly their task assignment - and let him translate all the Texts and App Strings in those 7 Languages instead - we gonna need them anyways, we knew. Instead getting stuck in unrealistic deadlines / sprints that are impossible, to take out the "virtual pressure", keeping the Team motivated based on REALISTIC goals and sprints, while people were not afraid to speak up about doubts, was really great, easy, did not cost us much time,

And due to those fine adjustments that we automatically made daily to increase productivity, only one hour discussing in the morning , everyone was were up2date of everyones progress and problems, this made us finish the product easily.

A wonderful example that those kind of agile team management and efficient solutions while staying realistic instead rushing under pressure for nonrealistic goals, even WITHOUT having a any direct Leader but a common consensus and protocol everyone follow, can make things possible and happening that seemed previously impossible.

[Proposal] Goshimmer dRNG Committee Governance

Some initial thoughts on our 'homework' about community governance (severely inspired by uniswap & honeyswap communities):

By what means should Community Members be able to gain trust (= Governance Power)?

  • Time and/or frequency of community participation (e.g. community members who evidently been around and helpful for a long time. Take elchwurst or Nuriel for example? --> SourceCred? )
  • Coding-Participation ( contribution in github? --> SourceCred? )
  • Long-term community node-operators (This is debateable, I know, just a suggestion^^)
  • Extra-ordinary efforts in community projects (e.g. nuriel, elchwurst, huhn & NOBODY for the node-playbooks, einfachIOTA, IOTAarchive and the Node-Pool. Great projects! 😊 )

Implementation ideas:

  • Guarantee uniqueness of identities --> DID (Maybe only DID-verified addresses should be able to vote?)
  • Grant governance-power / voting-weight that is otherwise worthless (to avoid token-farming) --> use low-value colored coins for voting in governance decisions
  • Have faucet grant worthless governance-token automatically triggered by specific emojis in discord (HIGHLY debatable. For HoneySwap it ended temporarily in bots farming SourceCred-points due to the governance-token’s value. On the other hand it improved the tone in Discord and the average quality of contributions. Of course also some undesired 'ass-licking')

Hint: Both Uniswap & Honeyswap use governance-tokens that have value. I don‘ t know why you’d want to go that way if you really only want to give voting-power equal to project- & community-contribution. That’s why I’d at least start with ‚worthless‘ tokens for governance power.

What is supposed to be governed? What kind of decisions are relevant enough to actually be voted on by the community?

  • This is where it might be reasonable to have some (small amount?) of money / token as the community itself. For example to pay for services with. Yesterday I saw the (unnecessarily rude phrased) request to improve the ledger wallet IOTA software since it does come with some bugs. Is this an IF task? Not really I guess. But it would be a task that could be voted on: If the majority of the community considers this task important enough (as a result of the vote / poll), a part of the community-money could be used to either pay external service providers or to thank community-members to take that task (yes... thanking someone with money is called "paying them", too, i know, but it's the wrong mindset^^). Dont get too stuck on this example, it's more about the idea that the community could actually govern (even with only very very limited ressources) something and maybe manage / prioritize and incentivise tasks that the IF already declared "out of their scope". Just an idea... (I did NOT say where this community-money should come from... I'd have no really good idea so far... )
