Translate selected text with DeepL

Overview

This extension for Thunderbird 68+ adds a "Translate with DeepL" item to the context menu. When you select text and use it, a tab will open up, and it will translate the text for you at DeepL. You can also use Ctrl+T or Ctrl+Shift+X to translate.

You can also choose to have it open in a new window instead of a tab. Please set it in the options page. In the options page, you can also specify the language of the source and target texts.

How to open the options page

1. Click the menu button and click Add-ons, or select Tools > Add-ons from the menu bar.
2. Click the three-dot button on "DeepL selected text" and select Options, or click "DeepL selected text" and click Options.

Notes

Depending on the version of Thunderbird, the "Translate with DeepL" item may not appear in the context menu after installing this extension. In that case, please restart Thunderbird once.

Thunderbirdのバージョンによっては、この拡張機能をインストールしてもコンテキストメニューに「DeepLで翻訳」の項目が現れない場合があります。 その場合は一度Thunderbirdを再起動してください。

Selected text not pasted into DeepL window/tab

I think your add-on needs a fix: The text selected for translation appears to be transferred to DeepL but is not displayed there, nor is the translation.

Keyboard shortcut for DeepL does not work in compose mail window

Deepl Translate context menu no longer display in TB 115

Hi,

In Thunderbird 115, the Translate button using Deepl is no longer displayed.

Not an issue but a proposal

A few days ago, I wrote on ATN a review for your add-on to say how good I thought it was and to give you some suggestions for improvement.

Keyboard shortcut issues

According to a review on ATN, the Ctrl+T keyboard shortcut doesn't work in the German version of Thunderbird because of a conflict.

does not work in Thunderbird 102.13.* anymore

unfortunately the addon no longer works in thunderbird 102.13.*.
Numerous error messages appear in the error console. It would be nice to fix the addon again.

These are the errors:

Texts are not fully recognized

Hello Itagaki,

It's been a while after the new release that I noted that text selection and hitting the "Translate with DeepL" doesn't work properly. It sends either a space character (" ") to the translate from box, or the selected text partially (not sure if it helps but I observed that the text will break after the first occurrence of special characters; what is before that is sent for translation but the rest omitted).

I'd be happy to send you extra information that may help to find the reason. Although I might need your help to retrieve logging files or of that kind.

• OS: Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS
• Thunderbird: 78.8.1 (64-bit)
