Could you please document the different versions of the PCB? I see there is Otter-Iron, Otter-Iron_Devkit, and Otter-Iron_Portable. Maybe just a readme with a quick description, although pictures would be nice.
Add footprints for the original tip-holders so that they don't have to be soldered on.
Any chance you'll sell these mainboards on Tindie or another similar storefront? I'd love USB-PD on my TS100 but I lack the ability to do fine pitched SMD soldering.
Hi there, very impressive work. Bravo Jan!
I noticed on the to-do list, there was barrel jack. I'm wondering what's the status of it. Thank you!
after uploading the newest v2.3 gerber files provided by you to JLCPCB.com the smt assembly option is greyed out and telling me that only certain boards (1.0-1.6mm thickness, green soldermask, etc. ) are allowed for assembly, all of which are correctly selected.
Re-exporting the gerbers did not help, although interestingly enough, the X2 gerber files do seem to work.
FWIW I was able to select SMT assembly for a different 4-layer board designed in KiCAD a few days ago, which makes this issue even more confusing to me.
Great work btw, hope to have this on the way soon! 👍
Could the Otter-Iron be powered by an integrated lithium battery?
I would love to be able to loose the wires for those small jobs not requiring the full 65w of power.
One could 3d print or machine a new enclosure with room for the battery
For future revisions, perhaps you could consider integrating in a boost converter to supply 24V to the heating element, such that the full 65W of power can be used. Perhaps the space freed by the barrel jack can be used for this.
Hi,
You designed a great PCB! I have some ideas to discuss with you.
Tom
Hey, this is not a major concern but you might want to fix it anyway - the tagconnect spec says everything between the centers of the pads is a keepout zone - you have a trace and a groundplane in that area. Seems the trace can easily be routed around along the board edge and the groundplane doesn't need to extend there.
Can it be used to accept Weller RT tips by just changing the hot tip socket?
thank you
First of all Great Project! I really love what you´re doing here. This is exactly what I´ve been searching for!
But on the original TS100 there is an accelerometer built in to put the device to sleep and wake it up again with the motion data. I really like this feature. So my question is, if it´s planned to implement this feature in the Otter-Iron?
Anyway I´m trying to rebuild the current PCB design and would like to give some support on the firmware.
