nuke's Introduction

Nuke Logo

Nuke

Nuke is a program that can be used to destroy the contents of a given drive. It zeroes out a given drive and writes random bytes for further data destruction.

Usage: nuke <drive 1> [drive 2] ...

Options:
-z, -0, --zero Don't write random bytes to drive
-n, --repeat Number of times to repeat the process (defaults to 1)
-Y Don't ask for confirmation (NOT RECOMMENDED)
-h, --help Display this help and exit
-V, --version Display version information and exit

Examples:
    nuke /dev/sdb
    nuke /dev/sdb /dev/sdc
    nuke -z /dev/sdb
    nuke -n 2 /dev/sdb

NOTE: This program requires root privileges to run.

Requirements

  1. GCC
  2. GNU Make
  3. PyQt5 (for the GUI front-end)

Build

NOTE: At the moment, Nuke can only be installed and run on Linux.

  • Download the source tree and change to the source directory.

  • Run make if you only want the command-line utility.

  • To compile the front-end, run make ui.

Install

Run sudo make install to make and install Nuke.

Uninstall

Run sudo make uninstall to uninstall Nuke.

nuke's Issues

Source code does not compile with older gcc versions.

make command fails with older versions of the compiler where the default C standard is less c99 since the source uses some features of c99 standards. For example, compiling on a fresh Oracle Linux 7.9 system with:

gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.8.5 20150623 (Red Hat 4.8.5-44.0.3)

make fails with the following errors:

 > make
gcc -Wall -g -c -o src/nuke.o src/nuke.c -Wall -g
src/nuke.c: In function ‘nuke’:
src/nuke.c:75:9: error: ‘for’ loop initial declarations are only allowed in C99 mode
         for (int i = 0; i < nreps; i++) {
         ^
src/nuke.c:75:9: note: use option -std=c99 or -std=gnu99 to compile your code
src/nuke.c: In function ‘rand_drv’:
src/nuke.c:160:9: error: ‘for’ loop initial declarations are only allowed in C99 mode
         for (int i = 0; i < bs; i++) {
         ^
make: *** [src/nuke.o] Error 1

make install does not work.

make install does not work since there is no recipe for 'install' in the Makefile. Running make install produces the following output:

make install
make: *** No rule to make target `install'. Stop.
