Improve plot quality

Look into other libraries:

plotly isn't free.
seaborn is based on matplotlib.
bokeh, holoviews and datasharer are non-matplotlib.

try ggplot2?

write a dendrogram myself?
you have to build up the groups a bit at a time.
all of the leaves are sorted. plot them out along the left edge of the diagram.
for each group (leaves at first) draw a line from the left edge inward.
when it joins another group, draw a vertical bar.
