I can see where the problem is! You don't have $? in your PS1. Try this:

PS1='$(~/go/bin/gbt $?)'

I don't see any problem with your configuration. If I strip it down to this:

export VIRTUAL_ENV_DISABLE_PROMPT=1
export GBT_CARS='OS, Git, Dir, PyVirtEnv, Status, Sign'
export GBT_CAR_PYVIRTENV_FORMAT='{{ Icon }}'
export GBT_CAR_DIR_BG='dark_gray'
export GBT_CAR_DIR_DEPTH='3'
export GBT_CAR_STATUS_FORMAT=' {{ Code }} '
export GBT_CAR_SIGN_USER_TEXT=''

The status code is displayed normally. Please could it without any of your configuration? If that works, start adding your custom configuration bit by bit and see where it breaks.

I tried it, same issue though.

I also removed the gbt binary and source tree, and ran:

$ go get github.com/jtyr/gbt/cmd/gbt
$ go install github.com/jtyr/gbt/cmd/gbt

same result.
