The theme for the calendar itself can be set with theme : "a" in the options. This defaults to "c", maybe we should change this to match the content-divs theme?

I'd say that the best option is to allow for <div id="calendar" data-theme="a"> taking highest priority.
When this isn't present, then use content's theme, like in:

<div data-role="content" data-theme="b">
  <div id="calendar">
    ...

that'd use the "b" theme.
If none is present, then get it from the JS defaults.

That's the default behaviour in jQm anyway.
