Weird. Please use a binary bisection approach to deleting emails from the maildir in question in order to obtain the smallest possible maildir which can reproduce the problem, and then share that maildir with us as a .zip
or .tar.gz
.

I did some further investigation. Unfortunately I deleted a bunch of duplicates already using fdupes. So I ended up with just one maildir left for issue testing. That was one with ~8000 E-Mails.
I first deleted stuff in it until there were 5108 Mails left. That maildir caused the script to terminate always I ran it. When I deleted some more E-Mails randomly (various runs) the script finished properly. When copied back, the script crashes again.
So I wondered why the crash did once happen on a relative small maildir. I realized that there were just a couple of hundred mails in it, but that it had many attachments and thus had a size similar to the other maildir with a few thousand e-mails.
Until that point I just ran the script on my shared hosting web server where I do not have as much resources as on a stand-alone PC. So I got the idea to transfer the maildir to my desktop PC and ran the script again.
On that machine, with the very same maildir and python version, the crash did not occur.
So I assume, on my server, the script terminates due to the limites ressources.

Ah, interesting. I'm surprised Python does not give a more useful error though.
