Trying to get in touch

Hello Kirill,

My name is Monroe Mann. I’m the head of a tech not for profit in the USA called Break Diving. (breakdiving.io)

I tried emailing you, but it bounced, so I'm trying to reach you here. We are hoping you may be able to help us.

We are all volunteers, including myself. We are a not for profit social media site to help people find success, happiness, and friendship around the world. You can check us out at www.breakdiving.io

We found your excellent blog post about using Rails Credentials on apps that are upgraded from rails 5.1 to Rails 6.

While I’m a RoR developer, and so are the other volunteers, we are all beginner-intermediate coders, and there’s a lot we still don’t understand.

Some other coders have told us that many of our credentials are publicly posted on GitHub, on our repos. While we are reasonably competent as programmers, we don’t understand secrets, credentials, gitignore, etc. very well. And we just updated the app to rails 6, but are still learning how everything works.

We were hoping that you might be able to spend an hour with us getting our credentials file set up, and helping us to understand better how we should safely store credentials locally, and also on production. We currently use Heroku, but we also use S3, and are starting to use SES, and in six months, we expect to fully switch from Heroku to AWS Lightsail. But we are completely lost when it comes to handling credentials properly and safely.

We have very little money, and we are all volunteers. We were hoping you might consider donating an hour or two to do a zoom screen share with us to help us, or to perhaps lower you rates and help us solve this and teach us how to do this for $50. We are very lost, and we have no idea who to turn to. Your blog post shows how knowledgeable you truly are, and we’d be honored if you might be able to find a few hours to help us.

A) To help bring our site up to date with Rails Credentials
B) Teach us how to properly store them locally, and on production
C) Explain why we’ve been using Figaro for many of our storage tasks, and if we still need to use Figaro moving forward
D) Helping us to understand how credentials work, and
E) Helping us to understand what we need to do in the future as we add or remove additional credentials

Thank you so much! I really hope we can work together. And if you feel you can’t assist us, can you refer us to someone who you think may be able to?

Thank you very much,
-Monroe
