roengines's Introduction

ROEngines

What is it?

ROEngines is a mod that takes the best versions of engine models available and uses them as the in-game models for Realism Overhaul parts. The duplicate engines that exist in Realism Overhaul are removed.

Why is it needed?

Historically, Realism Overhaul has been a mod that provides only config files that change the sizes and values of existing parts from stock and mods. This has allowed the mod to represent many different parts and engines that existed historically. Often, these models are only close approximation of what the real life engines look like. Other times, these models are not accurate at all and are only used in order to fill a niche that is needed.

Duplicated parts are a common occurrance in Realism Overhaul. Players will often have multiple mods installed that will have the same engines configured. ROEngines fixes this problem by removing the duplicated engines and only representing a single version of the configured engine.

Many players will typically install mods for specific engines. This can lead to very large installs with parts that are unwanted just to get certain engines. This will hopefully fix some of those problems by offering a single source for many engines.

Who deserves the credit?

All the modders that used their time and considerable skills to develop the models, animations and textures that you see represented in game. Each part that is included inlcudes reference to the original modder that created the part. In all situations I have respected the licenses (as far as I know) and where authors could be reached, I received permission to include them. If you find anything that you do not think should belong, please let me know and I will remove them.

Dependencies

  • Module Manager
  • Realism Overhaul
  • B9PartSwitch
  • ROLibrary

These come bundled with the mod.

Where are my Parts!?

ROEngines uses Module Manager and Patch Manager to remove the duplicated versions of the engines included in the mod. This way, you will only see one version of say an LR79, and it will be the version from ROEngines.

I understand that some of you may want these other versions of engines back, so I have used the Patch Manager mod to make this very easy for you to manage. Patch Manager allows you to select which Module Manager patches are applied. So for each engine that is included in ROEngines, you can choose to keep, or remove the patch that will hide the other variants, and the great thing is that it is all done through the KSP interface, no config editing required.

Using Patch Manager

  1. Go to the Space Center screen and click the icon for Patch Manager
  2. Inside the Window, click on the ROEngines button
  3. By default, all patches are active. Active patches are green. When these patches are active, it means that ONLY the ROEngines version of the engine will show in your game. All other versions of the same engine will be removed.
  4. To deactive a patch (allow duplicate engines), you simply click on the corresponding button. If the patch is disabled, it is shown in red.
  5. Click the Apply All button on the bottom left of the window.
  6. Use Patch Manager to shut down KSP, or click acknowledge and continue playing. Your patch will not be active until you restart KSP.

The rocket is ROE-A4, upgraded as A-9.

I hope it helps.

Greetings.

UPDATE, I haven't update for ROEngines v1.10.1, I already noticed now.

Add BDB Kick Stages

Add the Bluedog Inertial Upper Stage, Star 48B, and Star 37 to ROEngines, Opened after discussion on discord.

Stock Aerojet 2.5KS18000 not removed by Aerobee_Solids.cfg

The ReStock model for the Aerojet 2.5KS18000 is present in game even though the ROEngines patch in PatchManager/ActiveMMPatches/Aerobee_Solids should remove it. The model is also visually glitched, with the central orange-yellow band heavily flickering, so that should probably be fixed too
image
image

There's also an optional part variant for TU recoloring, but the textures are broken (although recoloring is working) and flickering is even heavier
image

Normalize Cost for non-RP situations [Bonus]

Well I'm not playing realistic progression now
However I sincerely hope that you can normalize RO Engines cost to a proper level (same as RP-1 is OK)
The cost problem has already been highly problematic in a bunch of engine packs like RealEngines pack, one part of the ROEngines.
That's because cost of most other parts are correct, but as for engines, they are highly incorrect for non-RP players :-(

SPE support

It's not clear to me whether the configs for this ought to live in ROEngines or SPEngine, but @pap1723 said to open an issue here.

SPE 'borrows' existing part models for its engines, with a smattering of dependencies on SXT, FASA, etc. It would be nice if it could use better models from ROEngines when those are available.

LR91 vernier transforms break roll control

The LR91 model from BDB uses and invisible second vernier to avoid causing asymmetrical thrust. However, both verniers seem to gimbal in the same direction, preventing roll from being applied. Further investigation needed, the second invisible vernier should probably be eliminated.

Missing textures

Per discord discussion: errors seen in KSP.log. Don't know if any represent actual problems.

Note a couple of missing models at the bottom

Clean up Old Files / Improve Models

Part of the goal is to move away from SSTU to the higher fidelity models that might exist from BDB and elsewhere. Here is a list of which parts still use SSTU models.

  • ROE-Agena8048
  • ROE-AJ10-transtar (AJ-190)
  • ROE-J2
  • ROE-J2X
  • All of the Merlins
  • RD-107
  • RD-108
  • RD-0110
  • RD-170
  • RD-191
  • ROE-RL10A3
  • ROE-RL10A5
  • ROE-RL10B2
  • ROE-RS25

I don't know what options exist, just wanted to get these listed out.

ROE generic thrusters have turbopump ignition spoolup

They take ~2s to start producing any thrust after hitting the throttle. The RO generic thrusters on the other hand ignite within 0.1-0.2 seconds.
After some digging I found out that the minThrust and maxThrust fields are what make the RO thruster behave the way it is.

MODULE
{
	name = ModuleEnginesRF
	minThrust = 0
	maxThrust = 2
}

Not sure if we want to add those fields to ROE as well or try to find a better solution.

LR91 Vernier does not vector

The LR91 vernier does not seem to vector on any of the LR91 configurations. It does not animate, and cannot thrust vectoring, although it does produce thrust. The identical RN US rockets LR91 does have a functional vernier, so I assume some config data was merely copied wrong.

RL10 nozzle is always extended

I'm having some trouble with the rl10 engines nozzle extension. When i select the engine on the VAB, the nozzle is already extended, i was expecting that they will only extend after activating...

AJ10 Advanced engine bell is too wide

The historic usage of the AJ10-138 was Titan III Transtage, where two of them were placed on a 3.05m diameter stage. With the model currently in use, it is not possible to put two AJ10 Advanced inside a 3.05m outside diameter fairing.

Engine Fairings

Almost all the engines have no way of removing the engine faring.

ROE-GCRC solid booster's throttle can be cut

Even though this engine says it cannot be shut down, I am still able to shut it down in flight (and thus restart it) by killing my throttle. This is the only solid that I've seen this behaviour on.

Provide pruner batch file for all affected mods

An OS dependent batch file for each supported OS and also a Janitor's Closet import file would be handy.

Those should prune (rename) every affected texture and model files which belong to the PART configs which are removed by ROEngines.

So the no more used textures and models are not loaded by KSP and waste RAM.

There is a slight chance that I will provide it, but don't rely on it.

Misplaced RCS-like engines

I noticed that two of the Niche Parts engines included as small RCS-like engines are misplaced and/or with strange configs.

  • The TD-339 is a bipropellant RCS-like engine in the Early landing node. I think it should be in Early Docking Procedures with the other bi-propellant RCS.

  • The R-4D is a very advanced (311 isp) RCS-like engine currently in Early Docking Procedures. Its description implies it's from much later, with mentions to Cassini and the Orion Capsule. Also, it has only 1 ignition, which doesn't make much sense for this kind of engine.

Include SSTU Engine-merging capability

In ROEngines the SSTU engines does are not as good as like original SSTU ones since they don't have tweakable mounts, engine cluster amount and a bunch of other varibles.
SSTU's engine-merging capability is truly amazing,as it make construction of heavy rockets much easier and also more beautiful(despite an unscientific point that SSTU engine mounts are massless no matter what size it is). However it is blocked by PatchManager of ROEngines, so I have to delete the PatchManager of ROEngines as a temporary choice :-( (the PM GUI also not work since I installed KSPIE and cannot open the ROEngines branch button.)
Another and much better solution is to use non-SSTU engine just meshes and introduce SSTU engine-merging capabilities and mounts to ALL engines. {highly recommended! for further development)(consider add mass of engine mount depend on engine cluster amount and type)
Also @shadowmage45 for this issue, looking forward to a happy RO collaborations!
I also love ROEngines since it is well-maintained (unlike REP abandoned in 1.3.1) and its most complete engine sets, fully RO-competatible and bugless.

Persistent Thrust Mod making RD-101/2/3 Plume not display

I am having an issue with the RD-101,102, 103 plumes not working on the RD-100 model. The RD-100 config works just fine but the other configs on that model do not seem to work. I noticed this problem while using the "Master" version of RO-Engines but I also tried replacing the RD-100 engine and plume configs from the release version of RO-Engines with no impact on Plumes. Randomly testing some other engine models like the A4 did not encounter this problem.

As a side not all of the ground dust particles that kick up on engine ignition display just no plume.

ROE-RS68 Engine Missing Mass In ROEngines/PartConfigs/RS68_SSTU.cfg

Module Manager is throwing an Error with SMURFF patches

[LOG 16:43:09.154] Applying update SMURFF/SMURFF/@part[*]:HAS[@resource[Ablator],~SMURFFExclude[*rue]]:FOR[zzz_SMURFF] to ROEngines/PartConfigs/RS68_SSTU.cfg/PART[ROE-RS68]
[WRN 16:43:09.155] Cannot find key mass in PART
[ERR 16:43:09.155] Error - Cannot parse variable search when replacing (%) key initialmass = #$mass$

Not sure if the Engines a are supposed to have an ablator and are supposed to have no mass? Also what mass are they supposed to have before or without SMURFF?

NK-15V uses NK-43 model, which is too large.

I mentioned this one on the discord but I figured I should keep track of it here. NK-15V/NK-43 uses the NK-43 model which is larger, making it unusable as N1 engine.
RNs NK-15V
ROEs NK-15V

Perhaps the NK-15V/NK-43 need to be split into separate engine parts instead of a config.

RD-107-117 and RD-108-118 vernors do not upgrade along with main engine

The ROEngines version for the RD-107/108 engines and its derivatives features two different engines:
The main engine and the small vernor engines. While this may seem like a good idea at first, there are two main problems with it:

  1. The vernors are not upgraded along with the main engine. This means that the mixture ratios will be incorrect. That's especially problematic for the RD-117/RD-118 variants which use Syntine instead of Kerosene, while the vernors on the same part still use Kerosene
  2. The Vernors do not respect ullage and ignition rules, and can be restarted arbitrarily.

Is there a way to simply drop the separate config for the vernors, add vectoring to the main engines and make only the model act like the vernor engines are moving?

Is @raidernick's CC-BY-NC-ND license being obeyed?

From the forum takedown announcement for the "Buran Energia Mod-Rebalanced and Fixed" mod:

This is suggestive that ROEngines may have a licensing problem with some of its content.

Chatting with @raidernick (including here to confirm authorial intent, happy to remove if @raidernick considers publicly sharing these private messages to be a privacy violation):

This "RN" folder seems to contain @raidernick's content:

I'm not necessarily in the loop on all of the relevant backstory here, so my question is:
Is the ROEngines mod distributing an unauthorized derivative of @raidernick's work?

2.2kN thruster

There's pretty ROE models for the other thrusters but not this one. Rescale something?

RD-180 gimbal breaks if the engine is rotated

If the RD-180 is rotated 90 (or 270) degrees about the roll axis from it's default rotation, the pitch and yaw gimbals stop working. This is probably due to some odd interaction with the multiple gimbal modules of the RD-180, since unlocking all gimbal axis allows it to work correctly again.

ROE generic thrusters are all over the place

A longstanding issue, but now I'm thinking of actually doing something about it.

ROE-PLE, ROE-MR104, ROE-S400 aren't configured in a way that's consistent with the base RO 1kN/2kN generic thrusters

  • all 3 have the same thrust, despite very different model sizes
  • all 3 have a thrust rating in their Title, but it's completely disconnected from their actual thrust
  • the 3 part names (and 2 of the Titles) reference specific real-world engines, but their only relationship to those engines seems to be the model
  • 2 have the same mass, consistent with 1kN, but the 3rd is much lighter
  • the biggest of them is about the same size as the 1kN thruster, but half the thrust

Proposed requirements:

  • all 3 should produce different thrust, to give more options.
    • 1 should provide the same thrust as the 1kN, for the sake of just offering a nicer model
    • 1 should provide half the thrust, as all 3 currently do
    • 1 should provide half again the thrust, for even smaller applications that are currently poorly supported.
  • all 3 should have mass "proportional" to their thrust, following standard RO rules (only the ROE-PLE needs a fix; it's currently set to explicitly override the mass RO would set)
  • all 3 should be scaled to fit their thrust
  • all 3 should have a less misleading Title. Just a (correct) thrust rating, no reference to real-world parts

Concrete changes this translates to:

  • ROE-S400 keeps its size (close to 1kN thruster) and gets double current thrust
  • ROE-MR104 keeps its size (maybe enlarged a bit?), gets half current thrust
  • ROE-PLE is scaled up so 1 nozzle is the same size as ROE-MR104, keeps current thrust
  • ROE-PLE useRcsMass = False becomes useRcsMass = True

BUT in the interest of not breaking any vessels, the current parts should be left untouched and deprecated via techrequired=undefined, category=-1. New parts should be created with the proposed changes, named ROE-generic-1/2/3 or similar

Phase 2:
At some point, might want to consider adding actual dual-MR107, MR104, S400 engines to ROEngines, since we have models that are presumably suitable. This is more work (would need RO engine configs), and there's already lots of small thrusters, so not a high priority. (such parts would presumably get named ROE-MR104-v2 etc)

R-7 engine verniers can move in two axes

The two RD-107 and four RD-108 verniers are currently capable of moving in two axes. IRL the two vernier chambers on the RD-107 could only move in one axis, and each pair of the RD-108's verniers could only move in one axis as well.

Multiple Engines miss Gimbal

Several engines, like the NK-33 and NK-43 do not have a gimbal. This is because their ModuleGimbal is missing the MODULE keyword above the opening brace.

Gamma 2 Engine Stats off

I came across a source that would seem to indicate that the Gamma 2 engine stats are a little off. http://www.astronautix.com/g/gamma2.html seems to imply that the burn time should be 113s not 140s and that the ISP should be 265 (vac) 251(sea level) rather than the 267(vac)/ 189 (sea level). All the other engine stats seem to be pretty much bang on with this data source.

ROE-SmallLC clips into engine

Probably a bad attachment node. Will cause Aerobees to go in a random direction if the engine is attached to that clamp.

Shroud visual problem

Shrouds cannot be jettisoned. Visual problem.
It seems that the shroud is built into mesh :-(
