However, I don't think I really like the idea of introducing war into the game.
I agree wholeheartedly. KSP is a place where I can pretend that we're trying to reach the stars because of curiosity and wishing to understand the universe, not because of the threat of war.

I also think it's reasonable to have a screen that pops up the first time the player begins, asking them at which level of technology they want to start with. I've nothing against unlocking a bunch of nodes for new games for players who want them, One of the reasons I loved RPL so much is that it integrated a lot of future tech into the tree, and one of my deepest desires is to play KSP with realistic physics alongside that future tech.
Skipping the first few nodes obviously doesn't give the player more to do during this time, but it does give them a wider range of options and an easier gameplay if they choose.

What about Rocket Planes? Like the x-1, x-2, x-15 or anything like that? I know they were drop planes and all that, but that could be a part of the design with the expectation of the player knowing the dropping plane will be kerbal physiced (/me checkes if "Kerbal Physiced is trademarked and if not claimes it!)
I wonder if it is possible to check speeds in missions. I assume it is as most of the .25 ksp missions had speeds in them. Might be pretty cool to have a Chuck Yeager mission to reach Mach 1. :D

I certainly have no objection to including aircraft, it's just a lot of work to place the parts. :)

lol, I'm currently finding that out. I'm trying to figure out how you guys do it so I can add IR. Satellites & Remote Tech are my favorite aspect of Modded KSP, so really want IR. No clue what I'm doing, but this is harder than I had imagined when starting.
