Check exit codes of child processes
Right now, debugging is really annoying: we consume stdout and ignore stderr so occasionally you'll just get no output because the subprocess got some data in a different shape than it was expecting.
We should:
- Figure out when the process should be dead (unfortunately the base JDK APIs for this suck)
- Check the return code
- If it's not 0, read stderr and bail
