square_array's Introduction

Square Array

Objectives

  1. Practice iterating over an array using the .each method.
  2. Practice operating on each element of an array.

Instructions

You will build a method, square_array, that squares each element in an array of numbers and returns a new array of these squared numbers. Use an iterator and implement your own logic, don't use any built-in array methods other than .each (e.g. .collect, .inject).

A couple of questions that you can ask yourself are:

  • What is the return value of calling .each on an array?
  • How can I operate on each element of an array and also collect or store those elements?
  • How can I square a number? Hint: There is more than one way to do it! You can use the exponent operator (Google Ruby's exponent operator to learn how it works) or you can use simple math. Refer back to the earlier lesson on math if you need a refresher.

Advanced

Once you have the tests passing, see if you can implement this with a higher level iterator such as .collect.

Expectation Examples

numbers = [1,2,3]

square_array(numbers)
# => [1,4,9])

new_numbers = [9,10,16,25]

square_array(new_numbers)
# => [81,100,256,625]

square_array's Issues

no lab content in Nitrous folder

Hello, whenever I try opening a lab via Nitrous, I do not see any content in the labs folder. This is for all the labs, not just the square_array assignment in particular. I did not have this issue while in the Intro to Ruby track.

Spencer tried assisting me via the Ask a Question, but we weren't able to figure it out in time as I had to log off.

Thanks

clean up and flesh out readme

remove tags, add objectives

give a little more background/clarify instructions. Ask them explicitly not to use collect but maybe hint that they will need a way to gather the results of squaring each element of the array and returning them. Then, give bonus of implementing with .collect

Fork and pull requests not registering with site

I was able to fork, edit, and submit a pull request for this lab, as well as passing all the local tests and that being reflected on the learn.co site, but the fork and pull requests will not register for some reason for this and the following two labs. After that it seems to come back to the expected behavior.

Code works in IRB but can't pass test

def square_array(array)
counter = 0

while array[counter] do
puts array[counter]**2
counter += 1
end
end

Judging by the number of questions, it seems like no one has been able to pass this test yet. Are there still Learn advisors who answers those questions?

Issue on hitting 'Open'

After hitting Open to get the lab, I got the following:
