leftvalues.github.io's Issues

Can only go back one question

Is it intentional that you can only go back to the previous question? People should be able to go back all of the way and buttons to Reset the Quiz and to go Back to the Home Page should probably be available throughout the quiz.

I was thinking of contributing to the project by making it accessible to users with disabilities, most specifically those who use screen readers, but enhancements like the above are also very helpful for all users.

Let me know if you'd like some help! Thanks for the quiz - it was fun

Suggestion to add more ideologies

How about adding more ideologies to the test?
e.g. Social conservatism (or Left-wing conservatism), Social liberalism, Libertarian socialism, Revolutionary socialism, Technocracy, Collectivist anarchism.
But I'm still not sure about all these ideologies myself. Many of them may be very similar to those already in the test.

Question order should probably be randomized

Not sure how much refactoring that would require but having the questions be in random order, rather than having every topic's questions be in order, would do a lot to balance the quiz a little bit

Suggestion for Market Anarchism ("ideology_Market-Anarchism_desc")

Hi!

While I was making a translation for Japanese (which I've just finished), I thought the description for Market Anarchism needs a few more words. What do you think?
(Also, sidenote: I think it would be really nice if the descriptions mentioned some influential/famous people or books)

Suggestion:

Market Anarchism is a form of anarchism that mixes anarchist goals such as the abolition of hierarchy, the state and capitalism with heightened individualism and a moderate reformist approach that utilises free market. This should not be confused with Anarcho-Capitalism, a branch of capitalism that advocates the elimination of states in favour of a freely competitive market.

Current:

Market Anarchism is a form of anarchism that mixes anarchist goals such as the abolition of hierarchy, the state and capitalism with heightened individualism and a moderate reformist approach. This should not be confused with Anarcho-Capitalism.

Specify percentage for closest match

The "Next closest matches" section on the results page lists how closely you matched with each ideology, except for your closest match. I think it would be cool to include it.

Let's say I got Eco-Anarchism as my closest match and scored 90% on Social Democracy as my next closest match [1]. 90% is a pretty high score to begin with, but its meaning changes depending on if I matched with Eco-Anarchism 100% or 91%.

[1] Fyi this sounds impossible; I just picked two random ideologies

Question 58 is misleading

The statement "Human population growth must be curbed to prevent an ecological disaster." is misleading

It's an popular belief that overpopulation is a major cause of climate change, but this is incorrect.
Overpopulation is caused by the need of many children for survival of the parents. There is an almost direct inverse correlation between income and number of children. This suggests the problem isn't overpopulation itself and a socialist society is a solution.

It is unclear what is meant by "violence" in the quiz

"Violence" isn't clearly defined in the quiz questions. Political philosophy has a wealth of literature about the nature of violence and the state's role in exercising legitimate violence as the will of the people. So when I'm asked about asking people to "peacefully" give up their wealth it's unclear if you mean just like asking them nicely or actually passing a law, which could be construed as a form of violence since the threat is jail or some other punishment if they disobey the law.

It would be great if this and maybe other terms (I didn't get that far into the quiz) could be defined somewhere or if the questions could be clarified a little more.

hi! your quiz is awesome, but I and my friends are Spanish spoken people, I think this quiz needs an internationalization module to bring the left political spectre to all the world! greeting from Chile, Southamerica, Socialismo o Barbarie!

Saving Picture of Results on iOS (Safari Browser)

When taking the test and landing on the results page it states that you can share/save your results by either copying the URL or saving the picture displaying the condensed results at the bottom, however, this option doesn’t appear to be possible using Safari on iOS, instead when trying to interact with it it attempts to copy the text above and space below.

Problem with the Image of the results

I don't know about other languages, but when I take the test in Russian, the results don't show the values' images (I just clicked "Neutral/Unsure" on all the questions)

Screenshot_9386

I find 'cultured meat being environmentally friendly' a controversial statement. It makes the question unclear.

The question: "Experimental environmentally-friendly food sources like cultured meat are worth investing in." is ambiguous since a lot of researchers seems to think the statement that it is environmentally friendly is debatable. The technology needed to make such meat needs a lot of energy and might never scale up to global demands.

see: https://caes.ucdavis.edu/news/lab-grown-meats-carbon-footprint-potentially-worse-retail-beef
https://theconversation.com/cultured-meat-could-create-more-problems-than-it-solves-127702
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8929989/

I suggest to either

  1. use a different example of an experimental food source, such as "insect-based food," which offers clear environmental benefits over cattle meat.
(I'll admit this example is not perfect since insects are a common food in some countries like Nigeria or Congo. So a person from theses countries doing this test might be confused and offended)

  2. Or to rephrase the sentence as "Potentially environmentally-friendly" since it's not clear if cultured meat may ever be sustainable.

Unclear immigration question

Mass foreign immigration policies are naïve and should not be implemented.

I have no idea if said policies mean they are allowing mass immigration or trying to prevent mass immigration. I'm guessing the earlier but the question is a bit ambiguous.

Respect DoNotTrack

Hey LeftValues,

I really like your work. A good friend of mine asked whether any data was being sent out to other servers than githubs, so I had a look into the code and found out that both Google fonts and statcounter.com are being loaded. I think it would be great if this wouldn't be done when DNT is active. I will have a look into implementing this if you don't mind

my answers and the philosophy that i was given don't match my score on partisan

It said and I quote "Democratic Socialism is a form of socialism that seeks to utilize liberal democracy as a means to achieve a socialist economy and society. Democratic Socialists reject revolution and a centrally planned economy, instead supporting moderate social ownership in the form of publicly owned utilities and democratic workplace self-management.
" yet i get 63.5% partisan .

Overview which question which values - possible?

Hello there! Thank you for your work!
I found some of the questions irritating but in the end I was surprised my result fits pretty well.
In a loose group of activists we are comparing and discussing the quiz now.

Is it possible to get an overview of which values have effect on which question?
I am sure it is possible to work through all the code to find out, but I am not so used to this and I guess you have something like that anyway.

Thank you!

Most of the font-sizes are unnecessarily large

I know this is a highly opinionated issue to submit, but I feel like the font-sizes are way too large, and make the website cumbersome to use. For instance, on a 1366x768 display, I have to scroll down the page to click any of the buttons, which is super unintuitive for something that should be quick to use.

Have to scroll down page to select an answer...

In my opinion, the "LeftValues" h1 font size should be halved, along with pretty much all of the other text on the page, so that the user doesn't have to scroll to click a button. This also makes the questions easier to read as the text is grouped closer together (although accessibility settings could be added for those who would benefit from bigger text).

Collect survey results and do some research using dimension reduction

I think if we need to make this test more accurate, we need to analyze it in a more quantative way. We can mark from 2 to -2 for each selection, and use pca to extract the 8 most influential factors and see how questions contribute to these factors. And thus we can find out the meaning of these factors.

Hi! I want translate it, can you heeeelp?

I want translate it! Where I can found the final-translator-&-credits-link policies? We have it?

If not, i need more helps, so.
I never tranlate a project in github. What can I begin to search for?

Ty u all!

Why only GitHub, owned by MS?

Why is this repository not on all GITs, such as GitLab, Ubuntu One, BitBucket etc? I don't see how GitHub nor the TLD of io represents the embodiment of "Left Values" though the test tries to capture such data itself for "fun". I'd like to see this on more open and free GIT platforms, if values be true to the game.

I am unable to review the source code as I don't yet know JavaScript, btw.

Problem with question

One of the questions in the test - "Total economic and social equality is realistically possible to achieve."
And answering "agree" to that question moves you towards utopianism. Why? Aren't social and economic equality the main provisions in Marxism?

On the Chinese translation of the word "Extremely"

Currently the word "Extremely" is translated to “极端”. However, “极端” has a pejorative meaning in Chinese, and usually carries a layer of meaning that "goes too far". I propose to change the translation of this word to “极度” or “极其”, which only indicate a high degree (higher than “非常” ("very")).

Question 9 Could be Replaced or Removed

"Oppressed peoples have the right to engage in a violent uprising when all other options have been exhausted."
I think everyone who identifies themselves as a leftist would agree with it, even the social democrats.

Issue with question in regards to its affect on revolution

The question: "Socialist political parties should participate in liberal democratic elections" seems to be a statement supporting reformism rather than revolution but paradoxically adds 5 points towards value a. This also seems to contrast the left communism result, which is categorized by %100 revolution but doesn't support participation in liberal democracy at all. I suggest changing the value to "-5" instead.

On the Chinese translation of the word "they"

In Chinese grammar there are three genders of the plural form of the third-person pronoun, which are 「他们」 for musculine, 「她们」 for feminine and 「它们」 for neuter. Considering the word "they" in question 50, which is obviously neuter, the proper translation in Chinese is 「它们」 rather than 「他们」.

Seemingly Blocked by GFW in Mainland China

This time my browser nearly always reports that "Connection Timed Out" and no visit works since I tried to check my result. Creepy since all visits I made in the past worked (at least in my mind). Therefore, I am afraid that the site may be blocked by GFW...

Add Russian Translate

I'd like to suggest adding a fourth Russian translation for the LeftValues. I've already translated all the questions and ideologies.

A suggestion for better translation work

I wonder is the original language in this project German?I suggest, to make translation more better, we should make the discribtion in original language as accuracy as possible, then native contributors in other language can note original distributions follow some fuzzy translations which situation is normal in non-alphabetic language such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc. that could help a lot for readers.

[suggestion] Reword some questions

Some of the questions will either leave both sides answering the same thing or cause other confusion. so they should be re-worded. here are the ones i could find

"Socialist political parties should participate in liberal democratic elections." change to "Socialist parties should primarily focus on participating in liberal democratic elections."
"The state can be best defined as a monopoly on violence and oppression." change to "Any state can be best defined as a monopoly on violence and oppression."
"''From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs'' is a good principle." change to "''From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs'' is an applicable principle"
"A world socialist republic is a realistic and desirable goal." change to be either realistic or desirable. it can be one or the other sometimes
"The means of production, such as factories and farms, must be publicly owned." change to "The means of production, such as factories and farms, must be owned by a state on behalf of the workers." i assume this is what its asking
"Reforming capitalist society to achieve better rights for workers is desirable." change to "Reforming capitalist society to achieve better rights for workers is more desirable than a revolution."
thats all thanks

Colors

Vary up your colors for each symbol at the end. Using incremental shades of red and brown do not look very pleasing or attractive. Some you can barely make out without squinting, like the anarchism one.

Gripe about the LeftCom description

I believe the LeftCom description is missing a major part about the current, which is the criticism of Marxism-Leninism and the split from the Bolshevik movement as a result, primarily against the authoritarianism and the Bolshevik aspect of the movement during and after Stalin's period.

Are there some data-research plans?

Something like result reviews page, using statistical methods to do research. Through this survey we can learn more about how people think about socialism, that's a further meaning I think.

Juche

I had previously filled out a Google Form asking you to add Juche, have you added it? If not, will you?
