nvidia-prime-applet's Issues

nvidia-prime-applet doesn't switch from AMD iGPU to NVIDIA dGPU

Essentially, the title says it all. If I am currently using my AMD iGPU and use the applet to switch to my NVIDIA dGPU, it won't work. After logging out to supposedly complete the process and logging back in, I see that the applet says the active profile is "NVIDIA (Performance Mode)", but directly above the profile area, it says that the AMD iGPU is running not the NVIDIA one. One of the ways I know this for sure is that nvidia-smi and gpustat will both fail to find a running NVIDIA driver. Furthermore, the NVIDIA X Server Settings application is completely empty, indicating that the NVIDIA dGPU isn't running.

Here's inxi for you guys:

Right Clicking on apps and selecting "Run with NVIDIA GPU" not working

  • Cinnamon version (4.8.6)
  • Distribution - (Linux Mint 20.1)
  • Graphics hardware - mx150 and driver used - nvidia-driver-460
  • 64 bit

Issue

I am running Linux Mint 20.1 Cinnamon with 5.4.0-70-generic kernel and nvidia-driver-460 on laptop with hybrid graphics (intel and nvidia). GPU Utilization in Nvidia x server settings will always be 0% when i run apps (for example celluloid) by right clicking and selecting "Run with NVIDIA GPU" but if i run celluloid with following command "__NV_PRIME_RENDER_OFFLOAD=1 __GLX_VENDOR_LIBRARY_NAME=nvidia celluloid" then the GPU Utilization will go up. So i guess the driver is working properly but the problem is with desktop environment.

Steps to reproduce

Right click on apps and select "Run with NVIDIA GPU"

Expected behaviour

GPU Utilization in Nvidia x server settings should go up.

Redesign the icon of "nvidia-prime-applet".

The Intel icon is too small; we should change it to something eye-catching, with a prominent blue color. If the Nvidia mode is enabled, it should be represented by a green Nvidia icon. Additionally, the icon should have a more square shape, similar to other icons.

[Question] Can't Find or Run your Applet

OK, so my laptop has an AMD APU (Wani) and an AMD dGPU (Lexa PRO). Normally I wouldn't be here bothering you with this but your applet has recently been updated to v1.2.7, which now "adds UI support for AMD integrated graphics.", and that has me interested. See, when I try launching a Steam game from my library with dri_prime=1 <gamename>, my system "offloads" the graphics handling over to my dGPU, but that's within the scope of Steam. It'd be nice to give your applet a try and getting to witness my dGPU in use outside Steam. Only thing is, this applet has been UPDATED, which means it "is running" on my system, but I just cannot find it using the applets manager window. What's the deal with that? Furthermore, no prime-related stuff is installed on my system, not sure if that's related. Anyway, how do I get to open your applet and see what's in store for me?

Thanks for your time.

With a Nvidia 390 driver applet shows invalid "On-Demand" option.

The "On-Demand" mode is not valid for this driver and selecting the option leads to an unusable desktop after performing the requested reboot (no taskbar, no icons, no cursor, no right click context menu and desktop BG image zoomed in compared to normal).

Please see the thread at:-

https://github.com/linuxmint/nvidia-prime-applet/issues/17

which includes HW info and dpkg -l | grep -i nvidia dump, as well as screen shots of menu options offered.

Applet not installed when upgrading Linux Mint

Whereas the packet nvidia-prime-applet gets installed, when a new installation of Linux Mint 17.3 gets done, it does not get installed, if the upgrade for Mint gets done with the update manager. I didn't find any information, that this difference is intended, so I assume this is a mistake. This behavior seems not to be related, whether or not a NVidia card is installed.
The packet nvidia-prime does exist on the machine with the NVidia card.
A user with an upgraded system will most likely not ever notice, that this applet does exist.

nvidia-prime-applet doesn't completly change (switch) the graphics driver in Optimus-Graphics

If I switch the graphics adapter in Linux Mint 20.1 from Intel-Graphics (Haswell) to the dedicated Nvidia-Graphics GeForce GT750M, the Nvidia driver isn't fully loaded after password input and logout and relogin. The icon in the panel has changed from Intel to Nvidia and if I look to the Nvidia preferences, the prime window is only shown and not the driver configuration window.
If I check the hardware acceleration with vdpau the driver from Nvidia isn't loaded. But the hardware driver from Intel is active (checked with vainfo). I have to fully reboot to active the Nvidia driver completly. In Ubuntu MATE the change with MATE-Prime runs fine without issues.

Hope the issue will be fixed in MATE 20.1 because it'is a very fine desktop system for my older Optimus notebook!!

nvidia-prime-applet not working on AMD/NVIDIA system

I have an ASUS TUF Gaming A17 FA706IH_TUF706IH laptop. It has a Ryzen 7 4800H CPU with an intergrated Vega 7 GPU, as well as a discrete NVIDIA GTX 1650 GPU. I have the proprietary NVIDIA driver version 455 installed and running perfectly. I have set it up such that prime-select runs well from the command-line and can select the GPU from there. I normally run it in on-demand mode. The lower-power Vega 7 GPU runs the main desktop and I can use environment variables to run OpenGL/Vulkan and graphically-intensive programs/games on the GTX 1650 GPU, but the nvidia-prime-applet won't run. If I run it from a terminal, it says: "Aborting: prime not supported - is this a prime laptop and do you have nvidia drivers installed?" Also, the Cinnamon feature that, according to the LM 20 new features list, should allow me to select the GPU on a per-program basis from the menu, isn't there. Everything seems to be working perfectly with Prime from the command line, but not on the LM-specific GUI side of things. I'm currently running LM 20.1 (I just got this machine a couple weeks ago, and figured LM 20.1 is close enough to release to just install it).

v1.22 Makes the Tray Indicator Go Away

I'm on Mint 20 Cinnamon, 5.4.0-42-generic, all appropriate "libappindicator" stuff installed, and all my other tray apps/icons are working fine. When I updated nvidia-prime-applet from v1.21 to v1.22, the tray icon disappears. Even when opening nvidia-settings and trying to enable the tray icon, it does nothing. When I downgrade back to v1.21, the icon comes back. Regression?

Applet caused numerous problems

Since installing the applet, my nvidia drivers have completely stopped working and the nvidia X Server settings window is just a blank gray box. I just upgraded to linux mint 20.2

NVIDIA Applet disappeared after upgrading to Cinnamon 4.6.7

 * Cinnamon version (cinnamon --version) - Cinnamon 4.6.7
   - Not using daily builds PPA.
 * Distribution - Mint 20
 * Graphics hardware *and* driver used - NVIDIA MX250 (driver - nvidia-driver-440 v440.100-0ubuntu0.20.04-1)
 * 64 bit

Issue

After upgrading to Cinnamon 4.6.7 NVIDIA Applet (which shows which GPU is being used) disappeared. It has been enabled by default when I first installed Mint 20.

Steps to reproduce

Upgrade to Cinnamon 4.6.7.

Expected behaviour

NVIDIA Applet functioning normally and showing the currently active GPU.

Configuration info, if applicable

The applet is not in the list of Cinnamon applets. I don't know if it has been there before upgrade, didn't check applets list before.
