npm badge

ECMAScript “ToPrimitive” algorithm. Provides ES5 and ES2015 versions. When different versions of the spec conflict, the default export will be the latest version of the abstract operation. Alternative versions will also be available under an es5/es2015 exported property if you require a specific version.

Example

var toPrimitive = require('es-to-primitive');
var assert = require('assert');

assert(toPrimitive(function () {}) === String(function () {}));

var date = new Date();
assert(toPrimitive(date) === String(date));

assert(toPrimitive({ valueOf: function () { return 3; } }) === 3);

assert(toPrimitive(['a', 'b', 3]) === String(['a', 'b', 3]));

var sym = Symbol();
assert(toPrimitive(Object(sym)) === sym);

Tests

Simply clone the repo, npm install, and run npm test

TypeScript type declaration file

If you want I can write a TypeScript type declaration file for this package so that TS developers can utilise the type-checking feature of the language as they use this package. Let me know if you are interested.

Version 10 of node.js has been released

Version 10 of Node.js (code name Dubnium) has been released! 🎊

To see what happens to your code in Node.js 10, Greenkeeper has created a branch with the following changes:

  • Added the new Node.js version to your .travis.yml
  • The new Node.js version is in-range for the engines in 1 of your package.json files, so that was left alone

If you’re interested in upgrading this repo to Node.js 10, you can open a PR with these changes. Please note that this issue is just intended as a friendly reminder and the PR as a possible starting point for getting your code running on Node.js 10.

More information on this issue

Greenkeeper has checked the engines key in any package.json file, the .nvmrc file, and the .travis.yml file, if present.

  • engines was only updated if it defined a single version, not a range.
  • .nvmrc was updated to Node.js 10
  • .travis.yml was only changed if there was a root-level node_js that didn’t already include Node.js 10, such as node or lts/*. In this case, the new version was appended to the list. We didn’t touch job or matrix configurations because these tend to be quite specific and complex, and it’s difficult to infer what the intentions were.

For many simpler .travis.yml configurations, this PR should suffice as-is, but depending on what you’re doing it may require additional work or may not be applicable at all. We’re also aware that you may have good reasons to not update to Node.js 10, which is why this was sent as an issue and not a pull request. Feel free to delete it without comment, I’m a humble robot and won’t feel rejected 🤖

An in-range update of eslint is breaking the build 🚨

Version 4.6.0 of eslint just got published.

Branch Build failing 🚨
Dependency eslint
Current Version 4.5.0
Type devDependency

This version is covered by your current version range and after updating it in your project the build failed.

As eslint is “only” a devDependency of this project it might not break production or downstream projects, but “only” your build or test tools – preventing new deploys or publishes.

I recommend you give this issue a high priority. I’m sure you can resolve this 💪

ToPrimitive has only one required argument

The version of ToPrimitive in this repository has a function length of 2. ToPrimitive has a function length of 1 because the second argument is optional according to the specification (ToPrimitive ( input [ , PreferredType ] )).

As this is an abstract operation and not available directly to userland application code this is probably not a real issue but I thought it would might be helpful to point out this difference.

Question: Spec, wild and library with Symbols and hint String

I'm trying to get my head around this, but the spec

http://www.ecma-international.org/ecma-262/6.0/#sec-toprimitive

seems to suggest that

ToPrimitive(Symbol(''), String); // "Symbol('')"

should give me a string representation of the symbol.

On Chrome 60.0.3112.90, if I perform

String(Symbol('')); // "Symbol('')"

which is indeed a string. But, using es-to-primitive ES6 I get the primitive valueOf.

typeof ToPrimitive(Symbol(''), String) === 'symbol; // true

Do I need to look at the spec again and better understand it, or is this a possible bug?

https://jsfiddle.net/Xotic750/Lyo2m7rj/

So, just tried

console.log(typeof Symbol('')[Symbol.toPrimitive](String));

and got a symbol primitve, and looking at

http://www.ecma-international.org/ecma-262/6.0/#sec-symbol.prototype-@@toprimitive

the hint seems to play no part in the spec, and so I guess it's not a bug in es-to-primitive.

String calls SymbolDescriptiveString before ToString

http://www.ecma-international.org/ecma-262/6.0/#sec-string-constructor-string-value

Thanks. ;)

Reduce the size of the npm package by limiting the included files

Looks like the files property (https://docs.npmjs.com/files/package.json#files) is not used in package.json to specify the included files, nor is the .npmignore file (https://docs.npmjs.com/misc/developers#keeping-files-out-of-your-package) is being used for blacklisting unwanted files, for the package published to npm.

Would you consider adding either the files property or the .npmignore file, so that the resulting package file would have smaller size?

The current size can be seen when executing the command npm pack (https://docs.npmjs.com/cli/pack).

An in-range update of tape is breaking the build 🚨

Version 4.7.0 of tape just got published.

Branch Build failing 🚨
Dependency tape
Current Version 4.6.3
Type devDependency

This version is covered by your current version range and after updating it in your project the build failed.

As tape is “only” a devDependency of this project it might not break production or downstream projects, but “only” your build or test tools – preventing new deploys or publishes.

I recommend you give this issue a high priority. I’m sure you can resolve this 💪
