undefined method erlang.monotonic_time()

When trying to follow the setup described in the README, starting the slave works as expected, but when starting the master, we receive the following error report.

We are using elixir version 1.0.5 and have started the epmd daemon before. We are a bit puzzled right now and can't seem to find a good explanation for this behaviour. Do you have an idea, what could be the problem?
