byu_bomberman's Issues

Modify Bomberman Interface to simplify restarting games

Request
Right now, we need a person dedicated to restarting each game after each round. This involves several keystrokes, and if the players are pressing buttons, they can interfere with the process. It would be great to modify Bomberman itself to be able to restart a round on a single button press, and to make sure the MakeyMakey's keys are mapped to ones that will not interfere with the game menus.

Perhaps, rather than selecting a level each time, we have a custom BYU map that is the only playable map. Then, it will just play that map each reset.

Graphite Controller Isn't Ideal

For future reference, graphite controllers are difficult for students to play with since there is no tactile way to tell where the buttons are. Furthermore, they seemed finicky in the 2hrs we used it.

We would suggest to no longer use graphite as a controller for Bomberman.

Grounding is Inconsistent

Issue:

The conductivity of people's skin varies enough that the grounding wrist strap occasionally does not work on people's arms. It seems to still ground properly when touching the palm of the hand (higher density of sweat glands), but even that is inconsistent.

Possible solutions:

  • All metal ground straps
  • Lotion before using
  • Strap to palm rather than wrist
  • Create a ground "ring" for a finger

New Controllers

Problem:
We currently have three controllers:

  1. Coin Controller
  2. Nail-bed Controller for Vegetables/Fruit
  3. Alligator Clips (currently used for Play-Doh)

Of these controllers, the coin controller is the most stable and durable.

Next summer, we need a student to revamp the controllers to be more robust and easy to maintain.
