m_prime_one's Issues

Reliability of the extruder

The default 3D printed extruder (not to be confused with hotend) have been tested and can deliver quality prints, but it starts to give problems after some time (in my case, days/weeks of moderate use). I think the plastic starts to deform after being near the hot motor for some time.

I have bypassed this problem by using a metal extruder, but it would be good for the project to develop a more reliable, 3d printed extruder. I will also try to make it compatible with my current metal extruder, so users can choose between the two options.

Rapid wear of the z axis screw and nut

The z axis threaded rod and nut system wears out very fast, due to the autoleveling feature that keeps it moving during all the printing time. In a controlled test it started giving problems after just 15 hours of printing.

The wearing of the axis causes backlash, formation of metal dust that eventually jams the axis and finally the definitive wearing of the nut and rod threads, the rod no longer holds the nut.

Temporary solutions for this issue are:

  • Lubricating the rod
  • Changing the nut
  • Flipping the threaded rod
  • Changing the threaded rod

I am trying to change the stainles steel nut for other materials: nylon and brass. I'll report on my experiments.
