I imagine you've given up/worked it out yourself by now, but just if you haven't or anyone else is wondering how...
Basically, you handle objects by providing a handler for getbyurl - this can be thought of as the exact opposite of an object's getUrl method. So, when passed a full url of a page it should return (if possible) an object associated with that permalink.
The example provided matches urls matching profiles, but if you wanted to handle say a blog post, then if the url returned by $blog->getUrl() is "http://example.com/blog/view/12345" then you'd need to write a hook that matches that URL, extracts the GUID and spits back the object.
