make test called vs. npm test

On Travis if you don't have a package.json file, it will assume you want make test to be called, which is why it was not doing what you wanted. I notice the code for this is here:

You might consider filing a bug with them to do a warning in the shell telling the user that it's missing. I'm not sure if they would take that change or not, but you could try--other people will also make this mistake.
