textfast's Introduction

TextFast

Have you aver felt boring in typing longs and tedious words or sentences every time when you want to reply a chat or created a post in reddit? This is addon is for you, it helps you type fast in a very customizable way in the browser.

You can create shortcuts for words, setences or emoji and then type them in browser and write really fast. For instance: you can transform the phrase "I'm comming" into a shortcut "imc" and every time you time "imc" you will get "I'm comming". Another one? You can transform "¯_[ツ]_/¯" into "shrug" and then you will never mess up with the characters ever again.

All you have to do is to enter in the configuration page (click in the icon) and create a unique style of writing to you and then, save it and that is it.

Good Luck, Have fun (typed: glhf)

Why?

Well, I'm lazy to type and I don't like to type too much, so I want to be able to type fast even in the Firefox and all the websites that I use.

Configuration

When you installed the addon, it will add a new icon to the top bar, click there and you will be in the "configuration page" (I'll improve that, I hope, I'm not very good at design). Then, click in the "+" (plus) icon and it will create a new row in the list. Now, in the "Replace" column you will put shortcut to your boring word, sentence or emoji and in the "With" you will put the real word/sentence/emoji and then, click in Save. That is it, now go to google and just test it and then, add more shortcuts.

Configuration Page

Import

Well, that it for the advanced users or the ones that exported the list from other installation (for who exported the list, you actually don have to change a thing, just import it, you can skip it). For those who don't want to add shortcut for shortcut, you can create a JSON file following this example with your words and just import it and save it.

Browsers

For now, I'm only focusing in the Firefox + webext. But, it will be cool to port it to others browsers and that is a good idea.

TODO

  • Support dynamic inputs;
  • Support non-usual way to enter a text;
  • Improve the UI of the list;
  • Use a better icon;
  • Sync your list with all your browsers;
  • Change the name (maybe).

Do you want to help?

Well, see the TODO list and talk to me, I'm open for new ideas.

textfast's Issues

All word replacements create a newline and space

Greetings, and it looks like this is issue #1 😀

I'm noticing that all word replacements are creating a newline followed by a space, meaning I have to hit three keys after any replacement: two backspaces to eliminate the extra space and newline, and one space to add one to the sentence I was already in.

As an example, if I had a replacement named "tableflip" which translated to "(ノ°Д°)ノ︵ ┻━┻ -", the actual output would be

(ノ°Д°)ノ︵ ┻━┻ -

This makes using the replacements in the middle of a sentence slightly bothersome.

Thanks for your work on this addon! It's in a niche that's now unfilled since Firefox killed the old plugin system.

How can i use the Export file?

I am trying to clean up all my replacements bc i have a lot and some may be dups.

How can I use the export file, make the changes I need to make, and then import it back in?
The export file is very hard to read....

Does anyone have a PHP Script or something else that will allow me to export the export file into a format where it can be read in a .txt file or can someone help point me in the right direction on how to use the export file from TextFast so it's more readable.

I have a lot of text replacements that I may have dups of or may want to combine...

I tried to use XML/JSON sites to try and make it more readable but not sure if the export file is XML format.... What format is the export file? JSON or is the export file a different format?

It would be nice to have it exported into a .txt file that I can then use in an editor to make changes better instead of changing it in the plugin in the browser. Then I would need a way to import that file back into the plugin.

Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to do this other than just going through the entire plugin via the browser?

Textfast breaks Reddit comment box

If Textfast triggers on certain sites it completely breaks the text box I'm typing in and I can no longer delete text...it's like all the text suddenly becomes immune to the backspace and delete buttons. Considering that most of the time I trigger Textfast by accident and thus the very first thing I want to do after it triggers is delete what it wrote this is very frustrating, but even if I wanted to keep what it inserted I would still have to type out the rest of my comment PERFECTLY because after TF triggers there is NO going back to correct any errors.
I encounter this problem most often on Reddit, but it has happened on other sites as well. Something about how their commenting system works just has beef with Textfast or vice versa.
So it would be awesome if you could fix this. It's super annoying. Either that or I would like to be able to blacklist certain websites so Textfast simply does not trigger on them, because I'm not even using Textfast to write Reddit comments so being able to blacklist Reddit so that the addon doesn't work there would actually be somewhat of a solution to this problem...for me at least.

Won't work with non-latin characters

In the latest version, if you ender a non-Latin combination it does not work

eg
тт won't render Текстфаст

Also, it's not clear how to add a replacement, enter or tab won't work.
