Code of Conduct at The School for Poetic Computation

In SFPC, we

  • Work openly
  • Be generous
  • Value full-time participation. What you put into this you will get out of it
  • Speak with respect, assume the most respectful interpretation
  • Step up, step back

Unacceptable Behaviors:

  • Violence, threats of violence or violent language directed against another person.
  • Sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, ableist or otherwise discriminatory jokes and language.
  • Posting or displaying sexually explicit or violent material.
  • Personal insults, particularly those related to gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or disability.
  • Inappropriate physical contact. You should have someone’s consent before touching them.
  • Unwelcome sexual attention. This includes, sexualized comments or jokes; inappropriate touching, groping, and unwelcomed sexual advances.
  • Deliberate intimidation, stalking or following (online or in person).
  • Advocating for, or encouraging, any of the above behavior.

Best practices:

  • Photography: ask for permission
  • Cleaning up your own mess! “I’m messy but not dirty”
  • Respect our neighbors, especially the Westbeth residents
  • defaulting to assumption that people are trying to be helpful
  • safe (abilities, backgrounds not questioned, speak my mind, honest) - physically safe.
  • Be respected
  • Appreciating diversity - ESL (English as Second Language)
  • get to know every single persons
  • value asking questions, no bad or dumb questions
  • Welcoming and shared space
  • Respecting teachers / respect for everybody’s different path
  • Mechanisms for feedback (plus/minus/interesting)
  • not afraid of step out of comfort zone, and lost. try something new
  • not afraid to share (skills? ideas?)
  • framework for sharing what we are working on..
  • Don’t want “one upping” no uninvited interruption, be aware of other people in the conversation
  • Step forward, lean back (speaking up and listening are skills which you can improve.)
  • No sexism, racism, ableism
