Unfortunately, I'm not particularly enthusiastic about supporting this use case. Reliably identifying the file you're archiving as being the same file you're writing to currently is usually hard to get right across all platforms.
A more reliable method is to ensure that the tar file you're creating is outside the directory tree you are archiving, and then moving the tar file into the final location. Is this an acceptable solution?
