Maybe those could be included as guidelines?
Maybe this doesn't make sense for templates where there is already a base shape, but since they recommend creating icons with a "distinctive shape/silhouette" it might be useful to create an "empty template" This could just define the size, grid and guidelines.
Newer icons in the elementary set use different gradients. I should update these templates to use the new setup.
Circle is missing resolutions
maybe use blue(cyan) and orange for grids this would probably be the most accessible. As for the guide lines maybe try and use the same colors that are in the elementary HIG.

There's nothing technically wrong with it but it could be a little better for reference look at devices/scanner
