What about using the drop action for this, not providing any specific items to drop.

Nils, your proposal wouldn't work. Assumed that we stick to the current logic (which means sending items to be deleted in the request), imagine the following scenario:
You have built a frontend form which allows items to be selected and dropped using a "Trash" button. If you don't select anything and hit "Trash", your proposal would trash all items, which is definitely not what the user would expect.
