Questions

If you want to know something about learn.microsoft.com, you can open an issue with [Question] at the start of the title to mark something as a question and not a suggestion to change/add functionality. Or you can reach out to us on Twitter.

FAQ

I've already submitted my idea on UserVoice before. Is it gone?

If your idea was not marked as Completed or Declined on the learn.microsoft.com UserVoice site, it is migrated over to the GitHub issue tracker in this repo. You can comment on the suggestion and we will properly attribute it to you with a link to your GitHub profile.

How quickly will you implement my suggestion?

Timeframes vary and we are unable to directly commit to any specific deadline after submission. That said, we will update the idea with the appropriate status once we have more details.

Previously I could upvote ideas. How do I show support now?

You can take advantage of GitHub reactions. Simply open the issue, and add a reaction.

GitHub reactions inside an issue

The added benefit to this is we also see how many people don't like a feature, compared to those that want it implemented - this allows us to design better functionality.

Stop translating to Dutch - It's useless and nobody uses it

Stop translating to Dutch at all. Use people to translate or don't translate at all. No machine translation, its useless for Dutch. And the suggestion of Den Delimarsky to submit feedback on the page where it happens is also useless. The complete document need to rewritten. Every document.

Improve cross-referencing

The wealth of information in this library is hard to mine, as cross-referencing between pages is haphazard. I came up against this when trying to find out about asynchronous programming in VB. There are two trails: one in the .NET documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/standard/async) and one in the VB documentation (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/visual-basic/programming-guide/concepts/async/) The former has links to the latter, but not the other way round.

I agree that this is an almost impossible task - the number of potentially missing cross-references must run into the millions. It's possible someone could write a program which examines all of the pages, searches for cross-references and checks that reverse references are also present. I'm not volunteering!

May I suggest that when pages are added or modified their cross-referenced pages are examined to make sure that the reverse link also exists, or that there is a reverse link to a parent page (if you see what I mean).

Update conent for Help Viewer

1- In Help Viewer offline content, I can't find SIMD-Enabled Types and many new features.
2- It doesn't conatan Entity Framework.
3- Where is Framework 7.1 documents?
4- Whey there is still options for Framework 3.5, 4.0. 4.5 and 4.6? This can duplicate the content beacuse most topics are the same. It should be only one Framework reference that contains the shared features and what's new in each version.
The Help Viewer content is a mess, and I don't rely on it for the last year!

No long-running scripts

You have recently moved a lot of content from TechNet to Docs. The moved pages work unacceptably slowly in IE. It takes a minute or sometimes several minutes for a page to become functional. This doesn't happen if I use Chrome instead. Unless you are trying to force people to move away from IE to Chrome or other 3rd-party browsers, I suggest you fix this issue ASAP.

Fix "previous-version" documentation pages

Pages that contain "previous version" information freeze the browser due to a script executing on multiple devices and browsers. This may be due to ad-blockers or proxy rules, but it does not occur on the main Microsoft Docs pages.

I actually suspect the banner that tells you it's "Previous Versions" and nags you to look at the "recommended version" - if I succeed in closing the banner, the page becomes responsive.

From a professional point of view, the site is unusable at my place of work. We use IE, and while there are fairly restrictive proxy settings, MS sites are all permitted. I have to resort to googling the page link and looking at the Google cache. assuming my IE isn't completely locked (and why can't I kill a single tab)?

While I'm on the topic, and no matter what is causing the page lockup, please remove the nag to look at the "recommended version". A simple highlighted line to say it's an older product with link to the "current version" at the top of the page is sufficient for those who are lost. I know Server 2008 R2 is in extended support - and many of us are still supporting it.

Example page here: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2008-R2-and-2008/dd379509(v=ws.10)

Fix search and filter and library

A very long time ago, Microsoft documentation was great. How did this docs site get so unbelievably bad? I ran searches for "windows server 2016" backup, windows server backup, etc. and found nothing useful. All that came up was links for SQL Server backup, Active Directory, Hyper-V, security guidelines... everything EXCEPT Windows Server backup?!... The Filter box is also useless - zero results when looking at the Windows Server library. Browsing the library for Windows Server 2016 failed to give me anything about the backup also, except for a command-line reference that explains nothing about backup options... Please fix your search boxes, and also create a search screen that allows manually filtering by product name & version, other keywords, posted date, type of help/support resource etc. If I was able to do this for my websites in 1998, you can do it in 2018. I believe in you Microsoft ;)

Deactivate auto translation

It's the ****ing worst to read an technical article in broken German. Every **** developer knows how to read English.

There is not even a button for it anymore? Or is the only option just to manually edit every **** URL?

Ah and while I see it. Automatic translation is just bad.

Make Tables More Mobile Friendly

On my phone, the table layouts can become unusable. Forcing me to wait until next I'm at a computer.
The words end up squished where only a few letters per line will show on larger tables.

In some tables where it's giving a line of code in a column, the code ends up written vertically which requires a LOT of scrolling. Meanwhile, the other columns are often blank space.

I have no suggestions on what could be changed to make it better. Microsoft Magic?

Examples are too large

The examples in many of your pages are too large. One such is https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/api/system.collections.generic.ienumerable-1?view=netframework-4.7.1

Examples should be as small as possible to show the functionality and use of the subject, not complete programs involving other concepts (such as LINQ in this example). That way, far less scrolling is needed, and the principles can be grasped far quicker.

I can not sign into my account, even when providing information.

I think its ridiculous, I now have over three accounts.
That I don't even know why I need them....?
It's becoming harder to remember all the safety "back-up account's" passwords etc.
...Then the safety precaution in the start
...like the account I am about to enter... I can't even access.

Allow the user to choose locale of help topics to download for offline reading in HelpViewer

Currently (and unless I got it wrong), there is no other way to download content in HelpViewer (for offline reading) in a locale other than the one currently selected in the base product (say VS). That is, if I use the english UI of VS and want to download docs in russian in HelpViewer (HV), I cannot do it. I have to select the russian language for VS, restart VS, then open HV and then I will be able to search for and add the russian conent.

My suggestion: add a select box for the locale in HV itself and use the chosen locale to connect to the right Web page and download the content in that locale. The locale of the UI in the base product (VS, SQL Server...) should only be used as a proposed default selection in the drop-down list of the select box in HV.

NOTE: You could use the same select box (this time with multipe choices allowed) to give the user the choice of the locale for the content to display for reading.

Include a section on literals in VB.NET documentation

The VB.NET documentation does not seem to have any information about how to provide literal values (numbers, characters, strings etc.). A new section is badly needed. It's taken me about 1/2 hour to not find the correct syntax for an unsigned 32-bit integer in hexadecimal.

Navigate to topic from old site

When coming from MSDN.Microsoft.com, the message box indicates "The .NET API Reference documentation has a new home....".

When you click on the link, the new site does not navigate to the current topic.

for example: I search for response.redirect. The Old MSDN site came up from Google. Clicked on the link in the message box and had to type in "response.redirect" again. Just navigate to the topic.

Include [SerializableAttribute] in .NET Framework Documentation

The omission of the [SerializableAttribute] in .NET Framework documentation is an bug as far as I'm concerned. I think its because now that Microsoft has the .NET Standard, it's supposedly left to each implementation to tag basic types as serializable or not. I think something is getting lost in the document generation process. MSDN docs are way more accurate. This may change as Docs comes up to speed, but it makes it hard for beginners to make heads or tails out of what they see on the site.

message read notification

After I send a message from my Outlook account, it is better to report it as read - if the other party reads my message.

For example: I sent a CV to my company looking for workers by making a job application. I'm wondering if you read it. I think sending the question message to the company for the second time is not correct. I would like to report this offer more alternativ. Thank you.

The MS Help Viewer should not require elevated (admin) rights

Currently the MS Help Viewer requires elevated (admin) rights to be able to download (and update) books.
It even requires to sign in as an administrator user to do that. The program can't add a book even when it's started with elevated rights in a normal user account.

It would be much more practical to use the Help Viewer as an ordinary program.
I suggest to download the books in the (normal) user directory, as %localappdata%\VisualStudio\HelpDocs for example.
This way, no elevation would be needed.

Search results should show technical area and should include filtering / sorting

Problem: Search results are a mixed bag. Even when larger search queries are used and searching only happens within one area of the docs, the results often span many technologies within that area.

Solution: Search results should be filterable, sortable, and should display what area or technology the result comes from.

Examples: For example, what if I want info on how to create stored procedures in SQL server? searching for 'stored procedure' yields 5,293 results. I'm not going to page through those. What area of the docs do the links point to? The only way to tell is by clicking the link, or maybe hovering over to see the url. Once I click on the top link, there is no clear way to tell how to create the stored procedure.

The situation is even worse with other keywords that are fundamental to SQL Server. Searching for 'cursor' yields plenty of results, but when searching for how to use a cursor in SQL Server 2008 the old docs were a generation better for finding or navigating to the info I need.

The new docs overall are pretty sweet on the actual pages - much better than the old docs. However, the search functionality as it currently stands is harmful to the UX.

Provide a landing page of consolidated product docs URL list and their related Github repo links

Currently, the default landing page of docs.microsoft.com only list the products/frameworks/topics of the documentations. For example: the main landing page only list links of .NET docs, ASP.NET Core docs, EF, SQL Server, Azure.
As far as I know, the github repo of those topics/products are not maintained in a single locations or under a single organizations, they have their own different github repo under different organizations.
Unfortunately, there's no easy way to directly go to github link of the product/topic from landing page. For example: to know the Github repo of .NET docs, you have to select .NET on landing page first, then click Edit on any page inside the .NET docs. This goes the same for ASP.NET Core, and other topics/products as well.

Code usage examples for Microsoft Azure

All topics on Msdn are having clear code usage examples for any API method or class library method released by Microsoft.NET f\w.

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/d00bd51t(v=vs.110).aspx

Nowadays, this key section is missing on all topics of docs.microsoft.com.

Especially Microsoft Azure based components\ class library are no clear, sometimes buggy. No help links online to get past that error.

Is it planned to take suggestions on improving docs.microsoft.com?
