stop-message-bus hangs when consumer channel contains messages but nothing is taking from the channel

The stop-message-bus hangs when shutting down when messages have been published on ActiveMQ but there are no internal consumers on the channel to process the messages.
Scenario:

1. The message bus is started
2. A consumer is started on a topic
3. The consumer channel is not used e.g. no clojure.core.async/take! or clojure.core.async/<!! or clojure.core.async/<! etc. are called
4. One or more messages are published to the topic
5. The stop-message-bus function is called
6. The thread calling stop-message-bus hangs.
