reclaimprivacy's Introduction

ReclaimPrivacy is no longer being maintained.

It appears the time has come to shut down this project. We had a good run, and in the end we were able to play a part in raising awareness around privacy, and hopefully influence some of the privacy improvements that Facebook did eventually implement.

If you still have old bookmarks pointing to ReclaimPrivacy.org or the privacy scanner bookmarklet, I recommend removing those bookmarks from your browser.

Even though this was a small after-hours project for me, I am thankful to everyone who was a part of this a few years back. Please continue to keep safe on the web, and keep track of your privacy.

Different result for 'contact information' in Opera and Firefox

When I run Reclaim Privacy's bookmarklet in Opera, it says
"Some of your contact information is exposed to the entire Internet".
In Firefox, it says
"All of your contact information is at restricted to your friends or closer."

Here's the screenshot from Opera 9.64

Here are my Facebook privacy settings at the time of the scan:

IM screen name: Friends and networks
Mobile phone: Friends of friends
Other phone: Friends of friends
Address: Friends only
Website: Everyone
Hometown: Friends of friends
Add me as a friend: Everyone
Send me a message: Everyone
E-mail address: Friends of friends

blocking Facebook Ad info sharing

Account > Account Settings > Facebook Ads

Two settings which (I believe) default to "Friends of Friends"

*Allow ads on platform pages to show my information to
*Show my social actions in Facebook Ads to

This may already be checked and my "default" of Friends of Friends isn't picked up, but if it isn't, it may be worthwhile to add a check on your scanner and suggest No-One.

Internationalization

Hi.
I think it will be useful to translate the application interface in other languages. Do you plan to provide an entry point for internationalization?

I can volunteer for translating it in Italian.

Doesn't discriminate between "only friends" and "friends of friends."

There are three basic states for a setting:

  • Everyone
  • Friends of Friends
  • Only Friends

There's also a fourth state: "Customize," which creates exceptions to a general rule, (e.g. "Just friends except people in my 'coworkers' list.")

For cases where a setting is "Friends of Friends," the scanner doesn't report that, but instead reports "friends or closer," e.g. "all of your contact information is at restricted to your friends or closer."

"Friends of friends" are not in any sense "friends or closer." Often times they're complete strangers.

New facebook privacy settings pages

I appreciate your work. I would like to help getting the scanner running again. My niece gets blackmailed on facebook. Some really evil person has promised to ruin her life. Facebook's default privacy settings are a joke. He sent disrespectful (more than that!) messages to all friends of her friends.

Is there any chance to have concrete todo's I could work on. I do not really know GWT, while I'm good at javascript. I could possibly get help from programming friends, if it is much work to get everything running again.

emanchado seems to be working on it already: http://github.com/emanchado/reclaimprivacy/commits/feature-newinterface

caution on items 2 and 4

from email report:

I receive a yellow caution indicator when scanning “personal settings” and “friends, tags, and connections settings.” When clicking the links to go to those settings, I am only taken to a blank page. I cannot seem to find where these settings are stored in my Facebook profile, either.

I am using Google Chrome on Windows 7 Professional x64.
