Keypresses are getting stolen by another add-on

After upgrading to TB 91.2, I noticed that when I start typing into a new QNote, certain keys were getting stolen by another add-on called Nostalgy++ (https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/nostalgy_ng/?src=userprofile) because they're used as shortcuts. Ex: s for Save email to folder.
I never noticed this happening before, but it's possible that it was happening previously as I often just paste the information I want in the QNote.
Interestingly, the author of Nostalgy++ makes an add-on similar to QNote called XNote++. I have no idea if the two are compatible.
I don't know if there's anything that you can do to prevent having the keys stolen when the QNote window has focus, but I thought that I would report this to you in case you were able to fix it. Of course, I will report this to the author of Nostalgy++ as well.

feature request: display on hover column icon

Hello,
I don't know whether this would be possible, but a nice feature would be to show the note popup hovering the icon in the qnote column without clicking the actual message.
Edit:
I just discovered, that the first characters of the note are displayed in the note column. So this might be less important. However, displaying the whole note (or some more characters) onhover would still be nice.

Thunderbird crashes when opening mails with qnote in Linux

Hi,

I'm using qnote in Thunderbird on Linux as well as Windows. Since some time (don't know exactly when), Thunderbird crashes when I open a mail to which I have attached a qnote. This happens only on the Linux machine, but not on the Windows machine

Used Environment

QNote: 0.12.2
Thunderbird: 102.4.2 (64bit)
Operating System: Ubuntu Linux 22.04.1 LTS

Is this a known problem? Do you need any more information to troubleshoot this issue?

Q-Note window in white black

Hello, I am using WIN 10 21H1, TB 91.2.0 (64-bit) and Q-Note 0.10.4.
Windows is running in "Dark Mode" and in TB the theme "System Theme" is active.
Recently I did TB upgrade 78.xx to 91.2.0. Until 78.xx Q-Note worked fine. After that, now the note window is divided only white-black, and the text is displayed black, runs when writing in the sharp area of the window, which becomes white under the text :

If I change the TB theme to "Light", the window becomes white-yellow, the text is also displayed black, runs into the yellow area of the window, which then becomes white under the text : picture 2
Until TB 78.xx also the note window under the mail header was yellow, now unfortunately also only black with white text : picture 3
Martins, maybe you have an explanation why this could be ?

Export notes from Qnote

Hi Martins,

I use Qnote to manage my business emails, and it's very efficient, so thank you for your great job.
Since I have migrate to Ubuntu 21.10 with TB 91.3.1 (64 bits) it's impossible to to export my notes in .json, there nothing in "Maintenance".
Ideally I want to put all my Qnote notes in XNote folder to synchronize with my cloud (Nextcloud) and my laptop.
Can you help me to find a solution ? Actually I'm locked... Please help !

Display not correct

Hi, I am using the latest version of TB and have now installed xnote++. However, the display is not as I am used to from before. The unsightly grey bar at the top and the icons squeezed to the bottom are not really nice. Why do I see it like this and not like in your screenshots (dark yellow bar at the top)?
I can also no longer change the font size and the subject of the note. If I drag the note to another location, it does not stay there when I open it again. This used to be different.

feature request: sync oder clients by imap fodler

I would like to suggest the following feature:
Store qnotes in special imap folder.
This feature would enable users to use qnote-Plugin continuously over different clients - e.g. work and home client.

I'm actually asking for help because i think it would be nice to have for sure!

Is it possible to store notes information in an external file (stored on NAS-Server for example or on imap server directly) and get those information into Thunderbird? I'm working with a small team & with thunderbird.. and notes inside those emails would be great to work with.

I'd like to attach notes to a folder instead of to a specific message.
That would be useful to quickly find information relating the contents of the folder (e.g. if a folder contains messages from a customer, the notes could be used to summarize outstanding issues with this customer).
These notes should be shown in a panel below the folder tree.

tooltip issue in TB 91

It's me again!
I just migrated to Thunderbird 91 and I notice another problem in QNote 0.10.4: the "Close and save" and "Delete" tooltips don't appear anymore when hovering over the icons in the note window.
Can you reproduce this?

Request: Add the ability to auto-note emails using filter rules

[EDIT]: I closed this as I completely forgot I could use TB's tags for this purpose.

I know this is a wild request and likely never going to happen unless you passed on some kind of support for FiltaQuilla extension or something.

However, it would be AMAZING to have some kind of filter rule control that can auto note an incoming message with a prepared text. Essentially, making the feature like an insane tagging option.

So if an email comes in from a specified address, you can auto-add a note that says something you want to remember. Like "This bill is set to auto-pay and this email can be ignored/archived" for an incoming monthly bill notice that is set to autopay but doesn't state it in the message).

Just an idea. Unless there is another extension that already does something like this (I haven't seen one).

feature request: date and text in one line

I can choose whether I want to attach title and / or text to the message. Both of them occupy more than a line. If I choose to not display the title (to save screen space) I don't see the date anymore. Would it be possible to only display the date and text - preferable in one line?

QNote clashes with Nostalgy++

After upgrading to TB 91 I cannot use QNote together with Nostalgy++ 3.0.4 (https://addons.thunderbird.net/de/thunderbird/addon/nostalgy_ng/) any more. It worked without any problem with TB 78.
While typing a QNote, Nostalgy++ recognizes the keystrokes typed into the note as commands, opens its configuration window and all sorts of funny things.
This did not happen with TB 78 (using the same Nostalgy++ 3.0.4 version). It also does not happen when I write a normal email.
I guess QNote keystrokes before were recognized as "normal email keystrokes" while now they are recognized as keystrokes "outside any mail" and thus triggering Nostalgy++.
Can you help?

Feature reguest: Formatting of text

I like your add-on very much. One thing that I find a bit missing and disturbing is the support of text formatting. And I don't even mean some styles which yes would be helpful, but would certainly complicate things.
Often when making notes in the editing window I use a new line, which is useful for noting down, for example, an address or a telephone number. And it shows up correctly in the editor window. But the same message in the window already appears on one line, which drastically reduces the readability of the note.
In html you would need to use the <pre> tag to solve this problem, or use the css property white-space: pre;

NOT WORKING with TB 102 Beta 1

AddOn is no longer functional with the current Thunderbird 102 Beta 1 . I tried disabling compatibility check, which re-actives the extension. Unfortunately clicking the QNote buttons in the interface has no effect.
Could you please adapt it to the latest generation of TB? It would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Column header icon in TB 91

Another issue with Thunderbird 91: the column header icon in the message list does not appear.

Notes are not writable

I had this problem:
When opening a new note, the window appears, but it behaves "static". It does not get the keyboard focus.

This just did "vanish". I did not change anything, but now the Qnotes do get a focus and I can type.

But now the Qnotes are not movable and not resizable.

Version of TB: 91.3.0 (64-Bit) running on Debian 10 with XFCE

Version of Qnotes: 0.10.4

I tried a new installation of Qnotes. This did not change anything

Feature request: shareable notes with team members

My team of 5 uses the same E-Mail account, [email protected]. It would be great if one could add a note and all other members could then also see it. This could be done via a network share.

Enhancement: Page context menu

It is currently only possible to create or modify a note via the context menu of the message list. I tried to add the context "page" in menu.js, the menu items appear but have no effect.

Would it be possible to add QNote items to the page context menu (message body) as well as the message list context menu?

Addon permissions

The permissions on the Thunderbird addons page tells me the following:

Permissions
Some add-ons ask for permission to perform certain functions (example: a tab management add-on will ask permission to access your browser’s tab system).
Since you’re in control of your Firefox, the choice to grant or deny these requests is yours. Accepting permissions does not inherently compromise your browser’s performance or security, but in some rare cases risk may be involved.

This add-on can:
Download files and read and modify the browser’s download history
Store unlimited amount of client-side data

But when I select to install, the permissions pop-up says that Qnote will have access to everything in Thunderbird and be able to control my whole computer.

This doesn't give a good impression, the mismatch between the two (the "This add-on can" text and the install pop-up text) suggests something untoward is happening. Is there some way to restrict the power that Qnote has if installed? It appears naively to only need to modify files under the Thunderbird profile.

Perhaps this is a problem of the Thunderbird addon system?

I'd love to use the addon, as a former Xnote++ user, but the permissions are giving me second thoughts.

Searching Qnotes in QuickFilter will exclude emails matching the Subject, Body, Sender, etc. in some cases

I use Thunderbird's QuickFilter all the time to search emails, and I value Qnotes ability to add searchable text to emails that otherwise wouldn’t use a keyword. This works in most cases, except when I’m using QuickFilter to search two or more words that aren’t in quotes. In that case, I will get appropriate "fuzzy" matches if I don’t use Qnotes in the QuickFilter settings, but when I use Qnotes, I don’t get any matches for a multi-word search unless the words are in quotes for an exact match.

Is it possible to get fuzzy matches using Qnotes in the QuickFilter?

Cannot add QNote to Usenet News

Today I realized that I'm not able to add a QNote to a Usenet message. Seemingly QNote does not work on NNTP (news server).
I press the [Qnote] button but nothing happens. I checked the message-ID of Usenet 'emails' and found no obvious differences to normal emails.
I'm using solani.org to access the Usenet.

Alt + Q shortcut should set focus on the note popup

Hello,

This is not really a bug report but more of an upgrade suggestion.

Alt + Q shortcut is great but could be a lot greater if the qnote's popup could receive the focus on the go. The user could then avoid the pain of using the mouse to set the focus himself.
Other avoided mistake's example : as your first note's letter is a A, and you did not notice that the note was not focused, you archived a mail and probably will struggle to find it again!

The result would be Alt + Q (open note and focus it) → write your note → Alt + Q (close the note)

Longer lines in header notes should wrap around

When I write in QNote a line longer than the current window size of my mail text window it is not wrapped around at the end of the window but is creating a scrollbar which is not convenient to read.
Thunderbird does wrap around any longer lines of the mail text itself automatically.

I need to scroll to the right to be able to read the rest of the longer QNote line:

Add clickable hyperlinks

Sometimes I add links to QNote text.
Would be useful if I could click on those links to open the corresponding page.
Currently they are rendered as normal text (see the two links below), so that I have to copy/paste to open the page.

About date formatting in the future version 0.9.2

I'm testing your last version of QNote (0.9.2?).
Besides welcome options like the default placement of the note or the delete confirmation, there is a new option to format the date.
This would be nice but, as the used method doesn't support locales, it's not possible to have the date in the locale if you include the weekday or the month name for example.
In my opinion, this is a problem. I'm not a developer but is there another formatting method which supports locales?

Force QuickFilter to Refresh

In Thunderbird, the QuickFilter is designed to immediately display search results after the user enters the search criteria. When I open an email and then return to the email list, QuickFilter should maintain my previous search results and not automatically re-search.

However, this plugin forced QuickFilter automatically re-searches after I open and close an email, or switch the windows tab.

I am using Betterbird 102.11.1-bb36 (64-bit)

• I double check XNOTE++, the problem is inherited from XNOTE++

• Update
  It seems about the tab.
  If I switch to another tab and return to the mail tab with Quickfilter results, it will redo the search.
  If I set it to open an email in a new window i/o new tab, the Quickfilter does not redo the search

Strange behavior ot the toolbar icon

I'm running Thunderbird 78.5.0 64-bit on Win7 64-bit.

• I create a new note.
• I save and close the note: the icon becomes colored.
• I click on the toolbar button, the note reappears but the icon becomes grey.
• I close the note again, the icon remains grey.
• Clicking the toolbar button toggles the note and the icon still remains grey.
• I select another message and come back on the one with the note: the note appears and the toolbar icon is colored as expected.

I think this is an issue introduced in version 0.9 since there was no problem with the version 0.7!

feature request: sync notes with email on imap

First, thank you for continuing support of this project.
I imagine it might be a difficult feature depending on the storage of the plugin but I've always thought that the missing feature of a noting system for imap is sharing the notes.
In our case we use imap as certain mailboxes are shared among various users. It would be great that this get synced between them on certain mailboxes or folders, which I imagine would require that the note is saved via imap on the email itself.

Mail overview column (Spalte Mailübersicht)

In the mail overview no column for QNote can be set up, so a sorting function is also missing.
In the (advanced) search the column is available, but can not be sorted either.

Column in message list not saved when Thunderbird exits

Hello, I am using Thunderbird 102.0.3 (64-bit) on Windows 10 with QNote version 0.11.2. Thank you for this fantastic add-on.

I have a minor issue with it. When I add a column for QNote in the message list, this column is not kept when I close and re-open Thunderbird. I tried to apply the column layout to all the folders, children folders, etc. but whatever I do the column for QNote disappears when I quit Thunderbird.

It would be great if you could look into this issue.

Bug in Qnote Popup on MacOS (workaround available)

Qnote works properly on Thunderbird 78.12.0 but on 91.6.1 the following problem occurs on MacOS.

Used environment

• MacOS 12.2.1 on Apple M1
• Thunderbird 91.6.1
• Qnote 0.10.4

Problem

Use of "Create new note" or the "Qnote->Modify Note" will result in a blank window without the possibility to enter or modify text. The text is shown properly in the Qnote column.

Please let me know if you need further details to reproduce the problem

Note stay open if I close thunderbird Window

First I use TBTray to disable closing Thunderbird.
1 - Create a new note on a message
2 - When I reduce Thunderbird using _ or X buttons then the window of the note stay on screen (wihtout Thunderbird)

Is there a way to hide the window when Thunderbird is "closed" using the X button (not really closed ;) ) ?

since I can not edit the note directly as attached to the message, it would be nice to open the (editable) popup window on double click.

I've been using Qnote for years but I recently ran into a bug running Tbird 115.12.2 on Ubuntu Linux. Every time that I try to create a new Qnote then Thunderbird will note save the note and I get this error:

Component returned failure code: 0x80520015 (NS_ERROR_FILE_ACCESS_DENIED) [nsIFile.createUnique]

Any suggestions for me or is this just a bug that the developer needs to fix?

Strange QNote operation on some mails

I have received an email that does behave strangely with QNote.
I successfully added a QNote to it but there is no note displayed until I press the [QNote] button in the tool bar. After that the correct note text is shown in a pop-up window and I'm able to edit it as normal.
But when I scroll through other emails in the summary and come back to this one email it again does not display the note until I press [QNote].
I've generally set QNote to display existing notes not in a pop-up but below the mail header and this works fine, except for this one email where the QNote is not displayed until I press [QNote]- and then it's shown in a pop-up and not below the mail header as all the other QNotes.
I noticed one strange thing about the email in question, it's Message-ID is: [email protected]
while the corresponding note file's name is 14656-350420841-1698522883%40xsell.c.qnote

It seems that Message-ID's for other emails are usually wrapped in angle brackets like this <[email protected]> where the corresponding note file's name then is 8ab727c0-c9bd-43b1-6c4a-cfe8ed6c50e9%40online.de.qnote
I've searched through my email backup and found quite a number of emails (148 from a total of 46077 files, 0.3%) with no angle brackets on their Message-ID's (for searching I used the RegEx "^Message-ID:[ ]+[^ <]").

Maybe QNote expects but does not check for the angle brackets? And then gets confused about Message-ID is like: [email protected] ?

Notes from Draft emails are not with the email in the sent folder after sending

Hi,

If you had a note on a draft email which gets transferred to the Sent items when you send it, then the note is not with the sent item.

I don't know if this is a bug or if this should be a feature request.

Fixed position from today

Hi,

From today some old qnotes - but not all! - and all new qnotes can't be moved, they have fixed position.
I am on Windows 10 with all updates and Thunderbird, last version "78.13.0 (64b)".

"Reset note window" problem in version 10

Hi,

I noticed that the context menu function "Reset note window" does not work properly as in version 9: It does not apply immediately, you have to close and reopen the note for the window to be reset.

Additional details:
In version 9.1, the size and position of the window was reset as soon as the function was called.
In versions 10.0 and 10.1, only the size of the window was immediately reset but not the position.
Since version 10.2, neither the size nor the position is immediately reset.

Can you reproduce this behavior and verify what I said? Thank you!

Date and time formatting do not fully work. For example: "h" should give 12 hour time with leading zeros; it shows up simply as the letter h (h:30 instead of 08:30 etc.). The same goes for "a" for lowercase am or pm. There are others that do not work.

Position Issues on newer Thunderbird Versions

Hello,

since few Thunderbird Versions (current 78.6.1) on my application the QNote window is out of Thunderbird Window.
I played already with the settings like aligend to message and no standard size & position.

I want it again on a position and configured size like last state as before?

PS. I like in meantime Qnote more then Xnote...

QNote won't save note on a particular email, but instead, throws up an error

When trying to save a note attached to a particular email, the save fails, and instead I get the following message:
Component returned failure code: 0x80520012 (NS_ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) [nslFile.moveTo]
Also, I notice that for each attempt to save the note, there's a temporary file created in the folder Qnote is using to save the notes.
There's nothing unusual about the email itself; it has a couple of attachments, but it's perfectly readable, so this error has me baffled.
I'm currently using Qnote 0.12.2; Thunderbird 102.7.0 on Windows 10 Pro version 22H2.
Any suggestions on how to eliminate this error?
