Regarding the need for something other than Chrome - Ungoogled Chromium might be worth a look as a starting point for a slimmed down version for Ferret: https://github.com/Eloston/ungoogled-chromium

@yiss Puppeteer is just Chrome DevTools Protocol client written in JS.
It depends on what version of Chrome/Chromium they use.

As I understand, they didn't open source their Dockerfiles, which might be a concern.

That concerns me. Is there a guide to building/running a stripped-down Chromium? We could make our own Docker image for it.

@davad that would be great! The reason I like Microbox's version is the image size is very small. Usually, whenever you find a docker image with Chromium/Chrome - its size is way bigger.
