system.js's Issues

avoid costly webgl test

Over on has.js we had a costly webgl test too, but some Chrome devs gave us a heads-up that a simpler test would require less spin up than
document.createElement( 'canvas' ).getContext( 'experimental-webgl' ).

Instead you could check for the existence/type of window.WebGLRenderingContext.

Better name: UserAgent?

Found your library by accident when using bower install systemjs to (hopefully) install systemjs. While I can see the utility of your code, perhaps a better name is UserAgent.js?

Once upon a time almost every application had UA sniffing code like this to detect the specific browser or browser version and execute polyfills or execute different calls. Those were dark times, man. Dark times.

[enhancement] Add missing bower.json.

Hey, maintainer(s) of mrdoob/system.js!

We at VersionEye are working hard to keep up the quality of the bower's registry.

We just finished our initial analysis of the quality of the Bower.io registry:

7530 - registered packages, 224 of them doesnt exists anymore;

We analysed 7306 existing packages and 1070 of them don't have bower.json on the master branch ( that's where a Bower client pulls a data ).

Sadly, your library mrdoob/system.js is one of them.

Can you spare 15 minutes to help us to make Bower better?

Just add a new file bower.json and change attributes.

{
  "name": "mrdoob/system.js",
  "version": "1.0.0",
  "main": "path/to/main.css",
  "description": "please add it",
  "license": "Eclipse",
  "ignore": [
    ".jshintrc",
    "**/*.txt"
  ],
  "dependencies": {
    "<dependency_name>": "<semantic_version>",
    "<dependency_name>": "<Local_folder>",
    "<dependency_name>": "<package>"
  },
  "devDependencies": {
    "<test-framework-name>": "<version>"
  }
}

Read more about bower.json on the official spefication and nodejs semver library has great examples of proper versioning.

NB! Please validate your bower.json with jsonlint before commiting your updates.

Thank you!

more robust Mobile Safari detection

Some user agents that are Mobile Safari like

Mozila/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/3A101a Safari/419.3

or

Mozilla/5.0 (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_0_1 like Mac OS X; fr-fr) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5G77 Safari/525.20

won't be detected correctly.

Macintosh isn't the OS

The UA string should be able to tell you Mac OS X or Mac OS instead of just Macintosh.

iPhone not detected as running on iOS

You have

navigator.userAgent.match( /ipod/i ) || navigator.userAgent.match( /ipad/i )

You should tighten up that code and use 1 regexp, something like:

var ua = navigator.userAgent;
if ( /iP[ao]d|iPhone/.test(ua) ) {
  // ...
}
