Installation

Download Locally:

Google Chrome

Download this repo as a ZIP file from GitHub.
Unzip the file and you should have a folder named hover-paywalls-browser-extension-master.
In Chrome go to the extensions page (chrome://extensions).
Enable Developer Mode at the top right.
Drag the dist folder that is in hover-paywalls-browser-extension-master onto anywhere on the Chrome page to import it! (do not delete the folder afterwards)
Enjoy!

How To Use / Demo

Enable in Hover Extension in Google Chrome, and you should see it on the top right along with your other Chrome extensions.
To bypass paywalls on the website domain you're on, simply click on the "Bypass Paywalls" toggle button.
It should work automatically! Enjoy :)

If it doesn't work right away, go to the "Advanced" tab, and try different combinations of the strategies to bypass the paywal using the Toggle buttons. Almost always, enabling just one of them will do the trick, but it depends on the website.

Many times, clicking "Block Cookies" and then "Unblock Cookies" will do the trick, as you clear your stored cookies!

How To Contribute

Fork the repository and improve Hover! Make edits in src folder, and then run npm run build. This will create the dist folder, which is used by browsers (see Download Locally Step 5).

Next Steps

Transfer into a Firefox extension.
Make Hover work for more sites.
Try to get back onto Google Chrome Store.

Notes

-The only permissions/settings the extension utilizes are for webRequest and cookie functionality, and nothing more.

-May not work on some websites.

Article stuck on loading on Bloomberg

Most of the article is stuck in a loading screen when Hover is enabled.

Found an unbreakable paywall in Italy!

Bloomberg breaks when cookies are disabled

Major portions of the site (graphs, menus) are unavailable and broken when cookies are disabled.
Furthermore, when cookies are enabled the paywall appears.

Problem with elmundo.es

I can have access to the normal pages of the elmundo.es website, but, because they are not on the AMP format, the pages on the https://www.elmundo.es/especiales aren't available as such.
And the pages that are under the /especiales section still require access to the paywall.
Is there a solution for these cases (they aren't supported by AMP)?

Manifest file is missing or unreadable

I tried installing this but both in Chrome and Vivaldi I get "Manifest file is missing or unreadable". I tried with both the master branch and 2.2.3, using the directory extracted from the zip file. Am I missing something basic?

Hello,

First of all thank you so much for this amazing app. Unfortunately, it is no longer working in any capacity on any websites (Medium, Nature, etc.). I have tried all combinations of turning off/on adblock, off/on Bypass Paywall, (Un)spoof site for Paywall, (Un)black Cookies for Paywall.

I use the latest version of Edge browser. Have Windows 10. Have not used any new program or browser extension. Just one day I wanted to use the app and it now longer does. Probably for around 1 week now.

Error on Chromium

(first off - thanks for releasing this! )

Hover fails with:

Failed to load extension
File /home/ivar/.chromium.extentions/hover-paywalls-browser-extension-master/dist
Error Manifest file is missing or unreadable
Could not load manifest.

on Chromium Version 89.0.4389.72 (Official Build) snap (64-bit)
AFAICT Chromium handles plugins in an identical manner to Chrome, but I could be wrong.
Is this a Hover issue or is it that Chromium isn't supported?

Can't install on edge nor chrome

BUG: Images don't appear

Using on ocregister.com and the first page worked great...showed images. But on subsequent pages, the main image is missing. I tried turning off ad block but that didn't help. Only turning of Hover altogether works, but then I can't read the article.
