Bring some color to your GNOME desktop by syncing your desktop and lockscreen wallpapers with today's Microsoft Bing image of the day (the image you see when you visit Bing.com) with this extension. The intention of this extension is to just do what it needs to do and stay out of your way, with a few optional features to improve quality-of-life.

Known Issues

• In China, users are limited to 'Chinese – China', 'English - International' markets (this is the way Bing handles the Chinese market/locale, not an extension 'bug' - sorry!)
• Bing may detect your location incorrectly (and force a locale as above) - if you see this, please let me know what Bing.com itself does
• GNOME Shell themes can break some GNOME popup menu elements (toggle switches for example). This impacts GNOME more generally, not just this extension. Double check you are running latest versions of your themes (or disable them).

Requirements

GNOME 3.36+ or 40+ (Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or later, older versions of the extension work with 3.18+, but are no longer supported).

Enable debug logging

Enable debug logging through the exptension preferences 'Debug options' tab or if unable to open preferences you can enable debugging using dconf-editor with this command:

Today's image not loading

My wallpaper is black, and when opening the file it says Error interpreting JPEG image file (Not a JPEG file: starts with 0xef 0xbb).

Update of the picture leaves an empty background

Hello,
since 17th January the extension only changes the wallpaper to a monochrome background. It's completely blue or black, whatever the main colour of the wallpaper. Can you help me?

clean up (delete) downloaded wallpapers after a certain time/disk capacity reached

Thank you for this excellent extension. Is there a way of automatically cleaning up the downloads after a certain time or when a certain capacity is reached? Or maybe just giving all downloaded pictures the same name and overwriting it each time?

Extension sets background to solid color (not bing image)

I just started experiencing this yesterday when my background suddenly was solid blue. I thought it might be a onetime issue, but today the background changed to solid white.

Description mentions some kind of mushroom.

So I cheked the url, which leads to the correct image:

Extension doesn't set lockscreen wallpaper when using LightDM

Currently the lockscreen wallpaper is only set for GDM, and LightDM appears to use a very different configuration method (plus there are two different greeters, GTK and Unity).

Not sure how to fix this without requiring user intervention. LightDM appears likely to be discontinued in Ubuntu, so this may be a legacy problem.

If anyone has an ideas, please let me know.

screen saver huge delays

when i have this extension on, it sometimes takes a good few minutes to open screen after it is being locked by screen saver.

Old images are kept longer than specified in the settings

It's easy to see that number of retained images is much higher than 7 (number from settings).

Possibility to rename local file

Normally I used my Windows VM with Bing Desktop to download the images. However, this neat extension for GNOME is neat and saves me some time and resources. One thing, I would like to see, however, is to be able to change the naming convention of the local files. Right now it is date-EXIF_Image_Description-resolution.

In bug #29 one needed to change a line inside "extensions.js" to make v15 work. If it would be equally as trivial to change it to only include the date omitting the rest, it would be enough for me to know where to do it as I am not too familiar with JavaScript and therefore did not find where the local filename is defined.

Refreshing causes Gnome Shell to fatal crash

Refreshing wallpaper causes Gnome Shell to crash on my machine since the update, making extension unusable (shell crashes every few seconds).

Light series Gnome-shell theme icon color depth

This wallpaper extension won't change my dsesktopn and lock screen wallaper

This extension won't even change my wallpaper after it has refresh after a day or two.

Lockscreen Change

The Change of the Lockscreen does not seem to work correctly. After initial configuration, even if the 'Change Lockscreen' option is set, the lockscreen background does not change. After switching the button in the configuration off and on again it works on next sync, but only for one time. When the next automatic sync is started, the Desktop wallpaper is changed but not the lockscreen background.

When I manually click 'Set Background' in the indicator menu, desktop wallpaper and background are set correctly.

Tested in GNOME 3.30.2

What does "Set wallpaper" mean?

Hello,

I have a short question. While I was translating into german I couldn't get the meaning of "Set wallpaper" in context menu from indicator.
Does it mean, you can set the actual wallpaper as desktop background image (when this option is disabled in settings)?
Can you explain it to me please? Thank you.

minor aesthetic issues in settings window

Hi, play a bit with this interesting extension i noticed some few minor issue in settings window :

1. there is a lot of unused space at the bottom...
2. comment label for "bing locale" and "Screen resolution" are not aligned like e.g. Notifications
3. could be reduced in width and aligned ,the input fields for options at point 2 (imo are too wide)
4. could be possibile reduce a bit the top/bottom padding between options (it seems to much, imo)

Set background image from tray menu should force changing the background

Hello :-)

Bing Wallpapers offen provides beautiful wallpapers. But sometimes I like a wallpaper so I would like to keep it some days. So I disabled the two values for changing background and lockscreen images in settings.
Every day I am opening the bing wallpaper menu in tray to see the description of the new image. Mostly I click on it to see the wallpaper in the browser.
If I like the bing wallpaper I go to settings and enable "Set as wallpaper" or/and "Set as lockscreen". After the new image is ready I disable it again.

So I would like to share my suggestions you can see in the picture.
With this menu you can see a preview of the "bing picture of the day" and you can set the picture as wallpaper on desktop, as lockscreen picture or both.

The values in settings can be activated and are useful for users who want to change the wallpaper every day automatically.

What do you think?
I am no programmer so I cannot realize this.

Bing Local stuck at Chinese-China

I try to change Bing Local to see if there is any different, but now i stuck at Chinese-China. I can't select any different Local because it doesn't show. Now i want to change back to English-International but i only see this.

Causing a Glitch traced back to this Extension

I am experiencing a sort of glitch where every minute (on the nose) my desktop freezes up momentarily (a couple of seconds), any open windows get about 20 pixels smaller on each side and a square border fills that space. Then the screen flashes (transitions) to the login screen background (just the background, no login form or top panel widgets) and then back immediately.

Turn extensions off, symptoms stop. turn this one extension one, they start again. turn all my other extensions on but not this one, no symptoms. I have just upgraded the extension (v14) moments ago hoping it would contain a fix. no dice - still producing same issue.

Creates new "null" folder in user home location.
Works after changing download picture location to existing folder.

Show a notification containing the title and the explanation of the image

Would it be possible to add the option of showing a notification containing the title and the explanation of the image? The NASA APOD extension implements this well and it seems this one is based off that so maybe it wouldn't be too difficult to add.

Language list should be sorted

As far as I see, Germany is not in the list of languages you can select. However, Bing of course has special wallpapers for Germany.

[Bug] Wallpaper has bing logo

bing.com has vanilla wallpaper without bing watermark logo. But our downloaded wallpaper has watermarked bing logo which is intrusive and disturbing. Fix this problem.

In china, bing locale would not work very well

I want use other country's bing image, but the request would always redirect to cn-zh. For more information: when i checked https://www.bing.com/HPImageArchive.aspx?format=js&idx=0&n=1&mkt=en-us, and sometimes the response data would be like this:

This was same like the request url of https://www.bing.com/HPImageArchive.aspx?format=js&idx=0&n=1&mkt=zh-cn.

So, I give a solution to redirect to international edition bing.com. and code gives : https://github.com/agodomen/bing-wallpaper-gnome-extension.

And I have modify the notify function, let it would show the image of the url.

Description is not updated at midnight

When my computer is turned on while entering a new day, wallpaper is updated shortly after midnight but the description in the menu bar is not updated and show description of yesterday's wallpaper.

Just once and then never more …

It happened to me twice out of two attempts to use your extension on two different computers both with openSUSE/Tumbleweed (Gnome 3.32.2 from the official openSUSE packages).

First nothing happens after the activation, then I select “Refresh Now” in the extension menu, and the image of the day gets downloaded from the Bing. And that’s it the wallpaper never updates, neither automatically nor when I press “Refresh Now” again (even the second day or after a week, with sufficient delay).

Full output of journalctl -xb is attached.

This is not duplicate of #56, because for me no image got updated.

Gnome crashing on Ubuntu 20.04LTS

Installing bing wallpaper extension on 20.04 causes crash although system still usable and wallpaper does change

Uninstall the extension and there are then no problems.
Nice to have it fixed.

Add option to blur the wallpaper

Hi, is it possible to add an option to blur the wallpaper, preferable separate sliders for blur intensity for the lock screen and the desktop background?

Wallpapers downloaded twice

As you can see in the picture, some wallpapers are downloaded the second time with "th?id=OHR." prefix.

Change Lock Screen wallpaper

I have just installed your extension from https://extensions.gnome.org/ . In the settings the update of the lock screen background is activated but refreshing the wallpaper doesn't change it.

Network error after login

The extension should wait for network connectivity before downloading the wallpaper. Now throws a network error and does not re-download.

4K resolutions not supported?

Please add support for 4k resolutions. The resolution options don't have 4K options.

Thanks to @jonnius for adding proper locale support. It's be great to add additional languages to the extension, unfortunately I only speak two languages, English and bad English. Translations would be appreciated.

How to submit or update translations:

We currently support 21 languages other than English and I really appreciate the efforts of those who've submitted translations (to this and my other extension). I'm sure the users of this extension all around the world do too.

I'd like to extend a request to our bi-lingual users to submit their own translations, here is a quick run down on the process:

1. Install poedit. For most users it's simply a matter of installing the poedit package.

• For Ubuntu/Debian:
  sudo apt-get install poedit

• For Fedora:
  sudo dnf install poedit

• For Arch:
  sudo pacman -S poedit

2. Download the translations template file for the extension here or find it within your ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/[email protected]/locale/ folder.

3. Open the template file in poedit and click on "Create New Translation" in the bottom of the window.

4. Select the language you want to create a translation for. (For some languages with regional variants you might also want to select a region as well, e.g. Portuguese.) [NOTE: I see some poedit warnings at this point, but you can probably ignore them.]

5. Create a translation for each line, where possible try to keep them short. And don't translate literally if it doesn't make a lot of sense. (For example, in your language "wallpaper" might not ever be used to describe a desktop background.) If you aren't completely happy with your translation, mark it as "Needs Work".

6. When complete, save the .po file and compile it to a .mo file.

7. Either:

• attach both files to this thread below;

or,

• create a fork of this extension
• save the .po and .mo file to this folder within the git repo: locale/[xx]/LC_MESSAGES/BingEarthWallpaper.[po/mo], or locale/[xx_XX]/LC_MESSAGES/BingWallpaper.[po/mo] (if the translation includes is regional)
• commit the changes and create a new pull request on this extension here

Two monitors

I'd love to see an option to set bing wallpaper only on one monitor on a multiscreen setup.

Request for an alternative icon feature

Can we have an option to switch the indicator icon to something else apart from the Microsoft Bing icon? I would like to keep the indicator on, but hate seeing the Microsoft logo on my desktop,

use XDG Picture directory instead of ~/Pictures/BingWallpaper by default

At first let my say THANK YOU for this extension. Since my switch from KDE Plasma i was missing the Bing Picture source wallpapers and you just solved this.
However there is one thing that I noticed.

By default you save the wallaper to ~/Pictures/BingWallpaper, since not everyone is LANG=C, this directory is not available for everyone. Could you "localize" that picture directory? You can get the actual directory by using

xdg-user-dir PICTURES

(wich would output /home/fabian/Bilder for me)

in a shell. Sadly I dont know how to make this work for your extension :(

Issues With Imported JPEG

Yesterday and today I experienced an issue with the Bing Wallpaper Gnome extension. The images were not appearing. Some additional investigation shows that the downloaded JPEG are somehow corrupted.

The link appears to be good, the file at link seems good, but the download somehow got an issue.

I uninstalled/reinstalled the extension without any success. I deleted and refreshed the image and the same occurs. I am wondering if I am the only one with this issue?

Refresh ends with the network error

When trying to refresh today, I get this in the journal:

I have still yesterday’s wallpaper even at 17:57 CEST (usually, the updates comes sometime around 09:00).

refresh button is useless?

I'm a China user. This extension could get ugly wallpaper some times and I try to get a new wallpaper by refresh button, but it doesn't seem to work.

If I want get a new wallpaper, the only way is change my zone(zh_CN or en_WW). One zone mean a wallpaper.

How can I get a new wallpaper in one day?

My computer is ArchLinux with Gnome. But Fedora and opensuse has same problem.

Doesn't show on desktop

For some strange reason I only see the bing picture when I open the Activities (dash?) screen. Otherwise it shows a solid color for the background.

Also, when I try to go into settings I get the following error message instead of a window of any kind.

This occurs whether I try from the top panel button, Gnome Tweak or the web.

I am running Ubuntu Gnome 16.04, my screen is maxed out at 1366x768 in case that is the issue. Clicking Background in the Settings shows the Bing wallpaper.

Icon does not fit gnome theme

Am I the only one that is experiencing some problems with gnome shell after having installed this extension? It takes ages to load at boot. :(

[BUG] Extension doesn't work behind an autoconfigured web proxy

I'm behind a proxy (with authentication).
In Debian I set all the proxy-stuff and also "org.gnome"-proxy-settings are set.
But I get "A network error occured: 2" as message.
How can I add proxy-informations to the script?
