learn-localization's Issues

Why? Who? What? When? How?

Why?

Believe it or not, most people do not speak/read/write English as their first language.
Translating both content and user interface is essential for helping people who are fluent in other languages to use your app/content.

Who?

The developer who has found "product-market-fit" and wants to make their content or app available to more people.

What?

When?

We don't often have a "When?" question in our learning but we absolutely should,
and nowhere is it more important than here! Most software projects we have worked on have approached i18n as an "afterthought" once the application has been built. The app has reached the initial (usually english-speaking) audience (though we have also seen this happen with companies who HQ is a non-english country and then need to translate into English ...) point is: most companies/people don't think about translation until after the app is "successful".

On the one hand we would argue that thinking about translation before finding product-market-fit is a "premature optimisation" that can delay the initial MVP release and cost valuable time. But on the other hand if i18n is considered early in development, then it can be much easier to achieve ...

This is a question we need to consider in more detail.
For now we need to focus on how to make i18n as easy as possible,
so that more developers/managers/decision-makers can consider it earlier.
