What compression should be supported?

Currently we support gzip and lz4 compressed streams. I am not sure exactly which compression algorithms make the most sense to have available.

Formalize the stream format

I originally just built the format by hacking things together. Before creating implementations in other languages (probbably JS and C) is practical, I need a full definition of the format in order to ensure that the different versions do not drift apart.

After formalizing, the format version number should be bumped from 0 to 1 in order to ensure that all endpoints use this exact format.

This will involve writing a specification.

Ownership on other systems

The user/group-related code is currently only currently implemented for Linux and Darwin. In order to continue further, the stat_x.go files need to be modified.

Windows is probably the only significantly different version.
