my-dear-watson's Issues

Xiwi target doesnt seem to work :(

Hi,

I'm new to this thing, just trying to get the script to work, great work btw!
I noticed the Crouton extension doesn't seem to work? Any idea why, and how I could solve this?
Also I noticed this is an older version of elementaryOS, are there any updates I don't know about which I could install?

Thanks!!

Add freya support

With freya RC being released soon please update script to 14.04 with freya updated packages.

Keyboard stops working

After running the script, my Toshiba CB2 loses keyboard and touchpad input. I'm unable to enter a username for the primary user, and have to log out and back in to get the keyboard to work. A USB mouse works, but USB keyboard does not.

Elementary Won't Start

Hi there, I'm trying to install Elementary via crouton on my HP Chromebook 14. The install seemed to go ok but when I try to start Elementary with sudo startelementary the screen goes black for a moment before I'm returned to the shell with the following output.

I have had Ubuntu running on this machine before but really want to give Elementary a go so any advice you can offer would be a great help.
Thanks in advance

Issue Starting elementary

Hey thanks for making this program.

I'm haveing a hard time starting the elementary workspace. I've been able to run ubuntu in the past flawlessly with crouton, but I would like some help getting elementary os to run.

I started the installer and ended up with the picture attached. Am I writing the wrong code?

Thanks

Wont Work

When I put in the command sudo startelementary this is what it gives me sudo: startelementary: command not found. And when I do startelementary this pops up -su: startelementary: command not found. PLZ HELP :(

Is it feasible to back up applications and their settings?

I have been using Elementary OS via MyDearWatson. It works remarkably well for me. I'm grateful for such an excellent, free product. Therefore please do not take the following as sign of ingratitude but rather a hopeful question.

I have installed and customized various applications in Elementary OS. Let’s say that I were to lose my Acer C720 Chromebook. In such a case, I would like to be able to easily restore the applications which I had installed and whose settings I had customized. I imagine I would do so by restoring a backup I had created and stored on a USB drive to a newly purchased Acer C720’s internal SSD.

See, if I were to merely reinstall elementary OS via a generic copy of MyDearWatson I would need to reinstall all of the applications which I have installed on Elementary OS. Then I would either retrieve my customized settings for each application from backup files (which I have not yet created) or fiddle around customizing each particular application all over again from scratch.

Upgrading Elementary OS to Ubuntu 14.04?

I was just wondering if anyone else is having issues upgrading Elementary OS to Ubuntu 14.04... When ever I upgrade it I always get a warning that initscripts did not exist and when the installation ends, I can no longer get into elementary. I tried using sudo sh -e ~/Downloads/crouton -n <chroot_name> -u after installing updates but, that does not do anything.

Remove xfce requirement.

I've been working on getting Elementary Desktop installed without crouton's xfce requirements, and I'm close. All that needs to be done is provide a copy of startelementary (a modified version of startxfce4) during the installation, which is easily done via any scripting language grabbing the file from a git repo or a pastebin.

Issue when requesting key

Hi,
I have spent the day trying to manually install Crouton with Elementary on my girlfriend's chromebook who had the "good idea" to buy one.

I finally found your script but I have an issue.

I tried to continue but the when I try to go to chroot :

I'm not especially waiting for an answer (as I'm not found of computers anymore and already have a headake) but just wanted to tell you.
Thanks for your work !
Bye.

No Chromium X Server available

Hi,

Thanks for the script. Unfortunately I run in the following error everytime I try to startelementary:
No Chromium X server available.

Here is a screenshot:

Please tell me how do I fix this, I really want elementary On my chromebook!

Thanks.

Acer c720 failing to switch back and forth between Chrome OS and Elementary with CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ [back or forward buttons]

  1. My Acer C720 with 4 gigs of RAM is failing to switch back and forth between Chrome OS and Elementary OS Luna when I press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+ [back or forward buttons] after I successfully installed Elementary OS Luna with MyDearWatson. (By the way, AldousP's script worked great for me. Kudos to AldousP!)
  2. I can successfully launch Elementary OS from Chrome OS but once I am in Elementary OS I need to logout (or shutdown or restart) to get back to Chrome OS.
  3. Immediately before running MyDearWatson on my Acer C720 I "recovered" (reinstalled) Chrome OS on this machine. In other MyDearWatson was run on freshly on a machine with recovered Chrome OS.

Have you considered editing the README.md file associated with MyDearWatson to include something like, "Do not upgrade to the most recent version of Ubuntu because doing so would cause your installation of Elementary OS to fail. In particular, be aware that if you are prompted with a seeming helpful or at least innocuous suggestion to upgrade your version of Ubuntu, in effect you are being asked if you would like to render unusable (worthless) the version of Elementary OS you installed with MyDearWatson. In terse, plain English: Do NOT upgrade Ubuntu when running Elementary OS which you installed with MyDearWatson. You have been warned!"

As I suppose you have inferred, I indeed upgraded my version of Ubuntu when prompted. But Chrome OS is so easy to "recover" (reinstall) the problem was a very minor inconvenience for me.

The following is a bit of prognostication. Feel free to ignore it.

Chromebooks + Elementary OS installed with MyDearWatson seem like a serious competitive threat to Apple Inc's desktop/laptop marketshare. But hey, what do I know. Back in 1997 I figured Apple Computer would be bought by one of its competitors not bailed about by Microsoft which was apparently concerned about losing a legal battle against the United States Department of Justice's Antitrust Division.

setversion 1.4 doesn't have permissions even when running sudo

After installing, running startelementary gives a permissions error when running.
I'm not able to run elementary os at the moment.
Also hey AldousP, this is Joseph from across the street ahah

Update to support Loki

My understanding is that you can't upgrade straight from previous versions of Elementary to Loki. Any chance of updating the script to support the latest version, please? :)
