Sorry that it took me that long to look at the issue, but finally I was able to check it. I've added the code you provided to the TestApplication's form constuctor and haven't got any problems at all.

I noticed that you have forgotten to specify setting config back to LogManager:

NLog.LogManager.Configuration = config;

But anyway, it does not cause exceptions. If you don't set config back, you don't get the message box. If you do set it back, message box appears. But I failed to get the exception you've mentioned.

Could you please try making a simple app which would reproduce the issue you are experiencing and post it here?
