Introduction

This is a simple chat app built with the help of Socket.IO, React and ExpressJS and use a MariaDB as the database. It is not a secure messanger. The project is more a kind of inspiration and help for people who want to build their own messanger. Currently it is still the first version and has minor bugs, with future versions these will be fixed and new features will be added.

In future version the custom login will be abolished, it will get its own DIY repo. Here everything will be switched purely to Keycloak.

Functions

  • Custom SignIn/SignUp
    • With OTP
  • Log in with a specific user.
  • Diffrent Providers with Keycloak
    • Google
    • GitHub
  • Email verification, by Custom Login

Custom Login

The sign up form created by the user is relatively simple. First, the user must set the following parameters:

  • Name
  • E-mail
  • Password
  • Repeat password

If the parameters have been set and the passwords match, the terms and conditions must be agreed to. Now the data is used in the backend, a unique ID is generated, from which an e-mail is generated. As long as the user has not gone to the link from the e-mail, he may not log in.

Keycloak

What is keycloak?

First of all, what is keycloak?

Keycloak is an open-source identity and access management solution that provides Single Sign-On (SSO) capabilities for web applications and services. It uses open protocols like OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, and SAML 2.0 to authenticate and authorize users.

Here's a high-level overview of how Keycloak works:

  1. User logs in to an application: When a user tries to log in to an application, they are redirected to the Keycloak authentication server.
  2. User authentication: The Keycloak server verifies the user's identity by checking their username and password against the configured authentication provider. This can be a local database, LDAP server, or social login provider like Google or Facebook.
  3. Token issuance: Once the user is authenticated, Keycloak issues a token that contains the user's identity and other relevant information like their roles and permissions.
  4. Token validation: The application can then use the token to verify the user's identity and authorize them to access protected resources. The token is signed and encrypted to prevent tampering.
  5. Logout: When the user logs out of the application, Keycloak revokes the token and logs the user out of all the applications that use Keycloak for authentication.

Keycloak can also act as a central authentication and authorization service for multiple applications, allowing users to access all their resources with a single set of credentials. It provides a user-friendly interface for managing users, roles, and permissions, and can be integrated with popular development frameworks like Spring and Angular.

Simpler said you know how when you go to some websites or apps, you have to type in a username and password to get in? Keycloak is like a helper that makes that process easier and safer.

Instead of having to remember lots of different usernames and passwords for different websites and apps, Keycloak lets you use just one username and password for lots of different places. It's like having a magic key that unlocks lots of doors!

And Keycloak also helps keep your username and password safe. It makes sure that nobody else can steal them or use them without your permission. That way, you can use the internet and your apps without worrying about bad people getting your information.

So Keycloak is like a helpful friend that keeps your information safe and makes things easier for you.

Keycloak has a feature called Social provider, this allows users to authenticate with their social media accounts, such as Facebook, Google, or Twitter, instead of creating a new username and password for each application they use. This provides a convenient and streamlined way for users to access multiple applications while maintaining their existing social media account information.

To use a social provider with Keycloak, you first need to configure the provider in the Keycloak Administration Console. This involves creating a new identity provider, providing the necessary configuration details, and optionally specifying the required scopes, roles, and mappers.

Once the social provider is configured, users can log in to the application using their social media account credentials. To do this, they select the social provider button on the application's login page, which redirects them to the corresponding social media login page. After the user successfully logs in to their social media account, the social media provider generates an access token and sends it back to Keycloak. Keycloak then verifies the access token, creates a new Keycloak user, and issues an access token and refresh token for the user.

After the user has successfully authenticated with the social provider, they can use the application just like any other user. The application can also use the Keycloak APIs to access the user's social media account information, such as their profile picture, email address, or friends list.

Overall, social provider is a convenient and secure way for users to authenticate with multiple applications using their existing social media accounts, while also allowing applications to access their social media information through Keycloak APIs.

Testing

Why do you create tests for software?

People create tests for software for a variety of reasons, but essentially they are used to ensure that the software works properly and meets requirements.

Some of the most important reasons why one creates tests for software are:

  1. Quality assurance: tests help ensure that the software is bug-free and provides the expected functionality.

  2. Risk mitigation: testing helps minimize the risk of malfunctions or errors that could have a negative impact on users.

  3. Time and cost savings: testing can identify and fix bugs early, which can reduce errors and associated costs.

  4. onfidence in the software: testing can increase user confidence in the software by ensuring that it is reliable and secure.

  5. Regulatory compliance: In some industries, testing is required to ensure that the software meets certain standards and regulations.

Overall, testing helps to ensure the quality and reliability of the software and ensures that it meets user requirements.

In oure case we use a selenium test in kombination with Jest.

Selenium

Jest

Selenium is an open source web browser automation framework. It allows developers to write and run automated tests for web applications to ensure that they work properly. Selenium supports a variety of programming languages, including Java, Python and JavaScript.

Jest, on the other hand, is an open-source JavaScript testing framework designed specifically to work with React. It is known for its simplicity and rich features that make it easy to create tests. Jest also supports snapshots, which allow developers to write visual tests for their React components.

When it comes to React, Selenium is typically used to run end-to-end tests, where a web application is loaded in a web browser and then automatically run through to ensure all features work as expected. Jest, on the other hand, is typically used for unit testing, where small units of source code are tested to ensure they work as expected. However, Jest can also be used for integration tests that connect different parts of the web application.

Overall, Selenium and Jest complement each other well to provide complete testing coverage for React applications. Developers can use Selenium to run end-to-end tests and ensure that their application works properly, while Jest can be used to run unit tests and ensure that every part of the source code works properly.

Demo

Hello,

I would like to inform you that there is a free demo version of my GitHub repository that you can access. This demo version gives you the opportunity to try and test the system before you decide to use the full version.

Please note that when registering for the demo version, we recommend that you do not use passwords that are used in other services, if you register with an Identify provider we will never see the password. If you register without an Identify Provider, the password will be hashed and salted, so we will not be able to read it in plain text. But why use strong passwords and always use different ones? It is important to use strong passwords and make them unique for each service or account to protect your security and privacy. A strong password should consist of a combination of letters, numbers and special characters and be at least 8-12 characters long.

Using the same password for different accounts can create a security risk. If an attacker gains access to one password, they can use it to access all accounts that use the same password. This means that an attacker can access and potentially misuse your sensitive information, such as bank accounts, emails or social media profiles.

Using unique passwords for each account significantly reduces the risk of such a takeover. If a password for one account is compromised, the other accounts will still have another strong password that is not compromised.

So it is very important to use strong passwords and make them unique for each service or account to protect your security and privacy.

We are not responsible for any activities that take place on the demo version. Data will be deleted periodically to ensure that your privacy and security remain protected.

Thank you for your interest in my repository. I hope you will use the demo version and gain valuable insights.
