@balupton @bergie @timaschew Anyone of you interested in helping with mentoring again? Have a look here https://ti.to/nodeschool-berlin/jsfest-2014
from berlin.
yeah, of course :)
@KenanSulayman are you interested?
from berlin.
👍
from berlin.
@timaschew Cool, get yourself a mentor ticket, so we can keep track of who is helping out: https://ti.to/nodeschool-berlin/jsfest-2014
from berlin.
I'm back in Aus now, so can't mentor. Try reach out to Microsoft Ventures, as they hosted the last one and provided free drinks.

After seeing the awesome hexagon designs by substack (http://scratch.substack.net/badges.svg), I had the idea that we could print some stickers and maybe use them kind of like DIY.org does with patches. So if you finish a workshopper you can get a sticker for the workshop.
Also we already have this sticker http://www.stickermule.com/marketplace/1502-nodeschool-dot-io. I guess getting them printed could be something sponsors could cover.
from berlin.
Okay I have no experience with writing sponsorship requests, but I did use this now: https://github.com/nodeschool/berlin/blob/master/sponsorrequest.md. Open for feedback.
from berlin.
sounds good! do you really need 200 euro for stickers?
from berlin.
No not really, maybe the next time I should write something like "sticker sponsoring starting from 80€ (the more you sponsor, the more we can print)". Main reason is that it would be nice to print stickers for the different beginners workshoppers and also a generic one.
from berlin.
How much is sponsorship? DigitalOcean would love to get involved :)
Also, I'll be there :)
from berlin.
@mikeal Wow, awesome! With 240€ we can cover the costs for drinks and the venue (assuming 100 people will be there, which will probably not happen, but better to be safe). Another 100-200€ and we can print some awesome NodeSchool stickers for the attendees. Additional money could be used for food, but there are no plans yet.
from berlin.
whoever is doing the invoicing should email me, mikeal dot rogers at gmail :)
from berlin.
@mikeal I wrote you :)
from berlin.
About the schedule, we have the venue from 17.00 to 22.00. Here is my proposed schedule. The time for setting up might be a bit long, but whoever is good to go might help others or already start with challenges. Also maybe not everyone will be there in time :)
Schedule
18:00 Short Intro & Setting up Software
19:00 Learn you node
20:00 Optional Break, e.g. encourage to present solutions
21:00 Wrap-up
from berlin.
@finnp friend recommended http://www.flyeralarm.com for printing stickers https://twitter.com/jancborchardt/status/505021894673063937

I would like to propose Wed 10th, 7PM @wikimedia (Tempelhofer Ufer 23, OSM) to meet and coordinate this workshop. If someone can't make it or has other proposal please just comment here.
@mikeal @timaschew @KenanSulayman @johannhof
I've also just sent email to everyone registered as mentor with invitation to continue conversation here
from berlin.
👍 Wednesday's good
I haven't been to the previous event and would love to get a little introduction on how I can help you guys/everyone. 😎
from berlin.
ill be straddling the fence between student and mentor! i've dabbled and have the rough concepts but am still a bit green :)
from berlin.
@basiclaser great! you can start as student and once you finish workshop fast you can then help out others 😄 please still come to mentors meeting if you like!
from berlin.
@ALL please consider helping with last wave of promotion https://twitter.com/elfpavlik/status/508906283668615168

Martin scheduled the OTS meetup for the same time (6.30pm) at co.up. Should we just move the meeting there?
from berlin.
It's 7:30 if I'm correct. I'd prefer to meet earlier if that is possible. 6:30 would be good for me.
http://www.meetup.com/opentechschool-berlin/events/204435402/
from berlin.
We could provide WebStorm classroom licenses for the participants and provide several personal licenses that could be raffled during the meetup. Any interest in that?
from berlin.
thanks for pointing it out @finnp! @johannhof and everyone let's meet then at 6:30 co.up (5th floor) together/alongside OTS JS for absolute beginners, preparation hangout for coaches
http://discourse.opentechschool.org/t/javascript-for-beginners-workshop-jsfest-berlin/875/27
from berlin.
@prigara do you plan to participate in this workshop yourself? I would encourage people to use code editor they already know so they focus on learning Node.js and not new editor. Still if you come and would like to offer some personal licenses of WebStorm to participants I don't see problem with it (as long as no one else mentoring during that event will object it)
from berlin.
Agree with @elf-pavlik
from berlin.
@elf-pavlik unfortunately, I'm leaving Berlin that evening and have to be in the airport by that time. Totally agree that the main focus now should be on learning Node.js, but still we could issue a multi-user classroom license for those who are already familiar with IntelliJ IDEs and interested in using that.
from berlin.
@prigara can you make it to our mentors meeting today? Otherwise please send all the information to email address you can find in my github profile. I can mention it during the workshop but please don't expect that we will put a lot of emphasis on it. And as I said, I will encourage people to work with tools they know and focus on learning Node.js during that evening. I hope it doesn't sound like we (or just I) don't appreciate you offer, on contrary thank you for your interest in offering your product to help people with learning technology which we all here feel excited about!
from berlin.
what do you think about using basic workbooks which just have empty files ready to edit? i just started discussion about it nodeschool/discussions#410
from berlin.
just to confirm: where/when is meeting today?
from berlin.
@basiclaser 6:30PM in co.up
from berlin.
@glaubinix thanks for registering as mentor! can you join us for short prep meeting at 6:30 in co.up?
from berlin.
@elf-pavlik sorry I am on an offsite until friday morning.
from berlin.
@glaubinix roger! please stay tuned to this thread 👂
from berlin.
@elf-pavlik Sure, will do.
from berlin.
from berlin.
I can manage the meeting today, but I will be there on 15th.
from berlin.
@finnp we meet today together with @xMartin and I hope we can invite everyone who have no experience with JS to the Sunday workshop.
from berlin.
I may be able to help with coaching on Monday
from berlin.
I am going to write an email to the people, who have no experience with JavaScript with this link and maybe othere resources:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1JmiLXDrF5J8FUSGM3q8yF7vXvKUCIX-kj9RVo-ItTJc/viewform
from berlin.
So, having access to a PC, I volunteered to try and install Node and Git to verify this is possible and provide a reference.
Installing Git
1
Go to http://git-scm.com/ and click the download button.
Run the .exe you just downloaded
2
Follow the installation instructions, I went with the following options:
Git for Windows ships with a unixy terminal app, which is good, so choose the first option here.
3
Now you should have this on your desktop. Executing it opens the Git Bash.
Installing Node.js
1
Go to http://nodejs.org/ and click the install button.
Run the .exe you just downloaded
2
Follow the installation instructions. I always went with the preselected options.
3
After the installation is finished, you can verify it worked by opening your Git Bash (see above) and entering
node -v
it should return something like v0.10.31
Learn you Node!
You can use the Windows Git Bash like other people use their Linux or OSX Terminals, they have roughly the same set of commands.
That means you can now install learnyounode
by following the instructions here
ATTENTION sudo
does not seem to work in the Git Bash, so just leave it out (you shouldn't use it with npm anyway)
from berlin.
So yeah, it worked.
from berlin.
awesome! thanks @johannhof 🌟
from berlin.
Hi everyone, I would like to join as a mentor. Already registered on ti.to.
from berlin.
Hi @Nilos, welcome on board and THANK YOU!
from berlin.
Hi @autarc, welcome on board and THANK YOU for joining as mentor!
from berlin.
@finnp I'll make this one page to show on projector!
from berlin.
@elf-pavlik Okay great, thanks. Can you push it to a new branch here, when you're done?
from berlin.
@finnp i'll just put this one full screen - http://nodeschool.io/berlin/2014/jsfest/
from berlin.
@elf-pavlik Here's another example. I think the wifi info is important. And if you are able to create a local server, then you could also add a link to that IP address.
from berlin.
hey guys, not going to make it today. housing / sleep issues :(
from berlin.
Sorry folks,
Forgot the time and will arrive ~ 18:30.
See you then,

Wow, I love you so much everybody ❤️ Too bad I couldn't be there, it is so awesome to see all the pictures :)
from berlin.
Thank you very much for this great event, especially for all the tutors helping us getting around! Looking forward seeing you @ next event. :-)
from berlin.
Had a great time! Thanks.
from berlin.
I would like to write a follow-up mail.
2 Things @elf-pavlik: Do we have a number of participants? And do we have a list of people who participated with Names/Github Names/Emails?
Things I want to include in the email:
- NodeSchool meet-up issue to participate
- Encourage to create a GitHub account (if they haven't already, push their code and watch the repository
- Feedback Form
- Sign up form for Newsletter for upcoming events.
- Info about NodeSchool Hamburg in November (maybe people can make it ⛵ )
I also thought about setting up a mailchimp with the email adresses. The good thing about that would be that people could unsubscribe from my mails, if they don't feel like receiving them anymore. But I don't thing we really have consent to do this.
from berlin.
@finnp if I am not mistaken then everyone who wrote some code pushed the code via fork to github. We helped all the github/git beginners to push their code. (Maybe for next time it would also be a good idea to reference the git/github workshop?)
@elf-pavlik also mentioned to all participants that they should watch this repo if they are interested in future workshops. I just checked the watchers page and there is a fair amount of people watching. During the workshop we did not collect emails/names of participants.
from berlin.
Many people forked https://github.com/nodeschool/workbook and pushed their progress there, I think most of the forks are from that evening.
from berlin.
@finnp https://github.com/nodeschool/workbook/network
@glaubinix we have emails in https://ti.to/nodeschool-berlin/jsfest-2014 bud didn't check who have registered and didn't show up
from berlin.
Okay cool, I hope that @glaubinix is right, because I now wrote that it was about 40 people (30 forks + 10 coaches). Does that seem about right? It's okay if it's a but too much, I don't want to scam WikiMedia.
from berlin.
@finnp I think ~5-6ppl struggled with pushing their work to github, let's count 35 students + 10 mentors = 45 people
from berlin.
It's a little late, but I created a feedback form for the attendees. I will send this by mail. Mentors can feel free to submit feedback as well. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QOHaGEpwU2KMyrbV8qAMX6tfMjd6q_en_Asiei2LAKA/viewform
from berlin.
I wrote an email to all the participants with all the crazy informations.
