For example, you could have a utility that could copy the Notepad++ directory at %appdata%\Notepad++, in my case, C:\Users\peter\AppData\Roaming\Notepad++, to a backup directory. This could be run as a command line utility like
backup-notepad-plus-plus --backup-directory="E:\notepad-plus-plus\backups-on-fast-host-c-drive\Notepad-plus-plus-3b248e15-f8ef-4371-8695-4249eda21646" for example.
