omegat-website's Issues

Link to /trunk in https://omegat.org/download

Since SF.net's SVN is happily frozen at pre-4.3 version, this "alpha" version should be named something different, not /trunk, and the link to it should be https://sourceforge.net/p/omegat/code/ci/master/tarball

Compiling instructions don't specify Java version

On this ticket a user followed the instructions here but was unable to compile because the instructions don't specify a Java version.

OmegaT currently does not run on Java 9, but that is the most prominent version at the JDK link. We should probably specify that Java 8 is required.

4.3.0 standard released

I'm registering an issue so I can know when the site is updated, at which time I will push the master data for the in-app version check.

(The version check sends people to the website, so until the site is updated there is no sense in triggering the version check.)

Signed Windows installers now available

We should probably add them to the downloads list. Or, since the list is already fairly overwhelming and signed is always preferred over unsigned (for Windows; there is no lag in providing signed versions, unlike with the Mac version) we could simply direct the existing items to the signed installers.

Mac dist is now "_Notarized"

With 4.3.1 and 5.1.0 the recommended Mac distribution is now the "_Notarized" one, e.g. OmegaT_5.1.0_Beta_Mac_Notarized.zip. Sorry to keep changing this up, but it's important for the build system to be able to distinguish between merely "signed" and "signed and with a stapled notarization".

Incorrect information about Mac JRE

The downloads page says:

Mac OS X users: the JRE is installed on Mac OS X by default; there is therefore no version for Mac OS X with the JRE.

Java hasn't been included in macOS since 10.7 (released 2011). The OmegaT Mac distribution has included its own JRE for years.

Confirm domain ownership for Sonatype OSSRH

I am working on migrating our dependency binaries off of Bintray/JCenter, which is shutting down in May.

I am moving them to Sonatype OSSRH, which syncs to Maven Central.

Sonatype requires me to confirm ownership of the omegat.org domain so that we can claim the org.omegat Maven group.

Could you please add a TXT record to the omegat.org domain with content OSSRH-67500?

Details: https://issues.sonatype.org/browse/OSSRH-67500

Update list of support channels

Add easy to understand "multiplatform" reference

On the top page, there is:

"OmegaT is a free translation memory application written in Java."

A lot of users don't (and should not have to) understand what that means.

Maybe something like:

"OmegaT is a free translation memory application that works on Windows, macOS, Linux..."

Mojibake on quote carousel

The quotes shown on the quote carousel on the top page are preceded by an invalid character:
screen shot 2017-04-05 at 16 19 24

The character is U+F10D, prepended by a :before content CSS rule here. However this is a private-use character and should not be used.

It's hard to suggest a replacement without knowing what the intention was, but perhaps something like โ (U+275D HEAVY DOUBLE TURNED COMMA QUOTATION MARK ORNAMENT)?

Update support info

I have announced that the user group is moving to SourceForge. The info on https://omegat.org/contact should be updated.

I am going to update links in the main repo as well, but the change is quite large since we include it in the source header:

/**************************************************************************

with fuzzy matching, translation memory, keyword search,
glossaries, and translation leveraging into updated projects.

Rather than chase the user group wherever it goes, I think we should have a https://omegat.org/support URL. While we could have that redirect to the mailing list directly, the SourceForge ML web interface is not very welcoming. So instead it could redirect to e.g. https://omegat.org/contact.

While we're on the subject, I felt like the website topology could be improved:

  • I was looking for "Support" but couldn't find it. In the header I looked under "Resources" but that wasn't right. Maybe a "Support" link in the header could be added, linking to https://omegat.org/contact?
  • I eventually found "Contact and Support" in the footer. I feel like lumping "Contact" together with "Support" seemed unintuitive, but I don't have a suggestion that would make a big improvement. Maybe "Community" or "Community Support"?
  • I feel like what most people probably want is the "support" part, not "contact". Maybe rename https://omegat.org/contact to https://omegat.org/support (https://omegat.org/contact can redirect) and even keep the content the same?

Download options possible confusions

"Windows with JRE" can be interpreted as "OmegaT for Windows, with a JRE included in Windows", when we mean "OmegaT, including Windows JRE".

That's something we should find a way to fix.
