Ambassador application - Joe Bostian

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Open Mainframe Ambassador. To be considered, please answer the following questions. Please also reference the Ambassador Program overview for any questions.

  • Your name ( also put in the title replacing NAME )
    Joe Bostian

  • Email
    [email protected]

  • Bio
I have spent my career working at the top layers of the platform stack, supporting Unix and Linux based workloads on z/OS. Open source software has matured into the de facto platform for new workloads across operating systems, and I am an enthusiastic supporter of this development.

  • Projects within OMP you would want to be an ambassador for
    Ambitus, Software Discovery Tool

  • Why do you want to be an ambassador?
The future of the mainframe is bound to our ability to make it an open accepted platform, and I want to help make that happen.

Ambassador application - Edwin Ackerman

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Open Mainframe Ambassador. To be considered, please answer the following questions. Please also reference the Ambassador Program overview for any questions.

  • Edwin Ackerman

  • [email protected]

  • Briefly, I was a mainframe COBOL in the 80's. The company I worked for investigated networked servers as a replacement. We/they bought into the hype with Netware and Windows about how we could reduce costs. I saw the IT budget not shrink, but shift, to more people with less expensive but more numerous servers.
Now I am trying to get back into the mainframe world. I am seeing through the new tooling like ID/z and Zowe, that while the older terminal based systems are still there, the new business environment is leveraging this technology onto the latest platforms. The fact that these newer technologies are Open brings the possibility that new IT students who once looked at the Mainframe as a dying beast, can rethink and rediscover the exiting new possibilities the Mainframe presents.

  • Open Mainframe

  • Programming on this "new" technology.

  • I like showing people new to the mainframe the possibilities that now exist with this fusion of a powerful backend with the ability to have the information they need in a familiar format no matter where they access it from. As an example I can generate a printed report for those that like to see the numbers behind the pretty graph, and have the graph for those that just want overview.

  • Attach a headshot Really In this age of Covid and Flowbee ? You asked for it. The beard can stay or go I'm not attached to it. Well I am attached to it or rather it is attached to me.
    WIN_20200502_21_51_01_Pro

Is the list of projects updated for the 2019 program?

I saw VMlink automounter listed in proposed.md and I saw that one of 2018 interns is already working on this project https://github.com/trothr/vmlink/commits?author=rusrushal13

Is this project still under development for the 2019 internship program or is the list not updated? I would like to know which projects are the one that will be a part of the 2019 internship program

I had another question do the selection depends on previous contributions to the project for which candidate is applying because for some projects it was not clear where to find the codebase to contribute to, I would like to start to contributing now to get familar with different projects

Julie Bergh

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Open Mainframe Ambassador. To be considered, please answer the following questions. Please also reference the Ambassador Program overview for any questions.

Julie has broad security experience, engaging all levels of the customer organization from the C-suite to Security Management and front line security analysts.

  • Projects within OMP you would want to be an ambassador for
    Security, mainframe, observability

  • List any other topics you would be able to speak about
    security, mainframe,

  • Why do you want to be an ambassador?
I want to learn more about the open mainframe project and promote the mainframe as much as possiblel

New Project Proposal - GenevaERS

*** Name of project** (must be unique within OMP)
GenevaERS, the Single-Pass Optimization Engine.

*** Project description** (what it does, why it is valuable, origin and history)

GenevaERS--the open source version of The IBM Scalable Architecture for Financial Reporting (SAFR)--is designed to deal with the problem of efficiently reporting on large volumes of transactional data. It is based on a set of software components with previously patented technology embedded, and it may be customized for use with new or existing data extraction and reporting applications.

GenevaERS is often used when large amounts of operational data reside in the z/OS® environment and complex reporting requirements create workloads that are difficult to manage through traditional techniques or tools. GenevaERS:

  • Runs quickly and efficiently
  • Scales to deal with large volumes of detail data and table joins
  • Creates multiple outputs, such as cubes, reports, and data marts
  • Helps mitigate issues with reconciliation and restatement through a single view of the data
  • Removes the need for additional transformations of the source data, allowing a simplified yet flexible and responsive data model
  • Enables organizations to process data on the System z™ platform where it resides

The GenevaERS solution helps support key corporate decision-making. It has a proven track record of addressing real business problems, such as account activity analysis, product pricing, fraud detection, and multi-dimensional sales revenue analysis. It has also been used to enhance existing investments in large, packaged enterprise applications and extend their capabilities. It accomplishes this by executing highly tuned batch reporting workloads on IBM z/OS and System z.

*** Statement on alignment with OMP charter mission**

GenevaERS has a deep history on z/OS. As a service offering (as opposed to a tool supported by license sales) built through collaboration with implementing partners, it has been developed in a collaborative way. It fills a space neglected by other offerings. The additional step of sponsorship by OMP will help with further adoption and development of the tool.

The closest technology might be Apache Spark; GenevaERS's native z/OS machine code generation provides much greater performance and distinct processing functionalities.

*** Sponsor from TAC** (sponsor helps mentor projects)
Enyu Wang, IBM, Program Director, Ecosystem Business Development & Strategy

*** Preferred maturity level** (see project stages)
Incubation Stage

*** License and contribution guidelines** (refer to the OMP guidelines)
Apache 2.0

*** Source control** (GitHub by default)
TBD, likely GitHub. Currently using Rational toolsets internally in IBM.

*** External dependencies** (including licenses)
No external licenses. IBM certificate of originality in place, and all IBM approvals for contribution to open source secured. Existing customers notified. Current maintenance team all employed by IBM.

*** Initial committers** (how long working on project)

  • Global Financial System SME: Kip Twitchell, continuous involvement for nearly 30 years
  • Product Manager: James Hladyshewsky, manager for over 10 years, implementation consultant another 10 years
  • Lead architect Randall Ness, continuous involvement over 30 years

*** Infrastructure requests** (CI / OMP Cluster)
To be determined. Source code currently maintained in Rational toolset internally within IBM.

*** Communication channels** (slack, irc, mailing lists)
Slack channel named "sharealedger" https://sharealedger.slack.com.
Active GenevaERS Alumni e-mail lists will be converted.

*** Issue tracker** (GitHub by default)
To be determined, currently using Rational toolset internally in IBM.

*** Website**
https://genevaers.org Additional thought leadership on shared ledgers will be developed within the https://sharealedger.org domain.

*** Release methodology and mechanics**
To be determined. Currently use a permission access website for executable download by existing customers

*** Social media accounts**
Related blogging/vlogging performed by @finsysvlogger, Kip Twitchell, on twitter, linked-in, and at ledgerlearning.com (or financialsystemseducation.com) and on YouTube at Conversations with Kip (https://www.youtube.com/kiptwitchellvlog) and Sharealedger-org (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbogHQcugFgZK1QNoovNRHw)

*** Community size and any existing sponsorship**
IBM maintenance and knowledgeable staff on the order of a dozen people. Currently approximately 25 - 30 GenevaERS/SAFR staff in Diaspora. Two existing customers have various teams supporting the product, and extensible code which might be contributed to the project. Growing community of Sharealedger participants over the last three months.

Demo using Polycephaly in different developer scenarios

The TAC is always looking for topics of interest to the community. Please fill out the following details and this will be added to the next TAC meeting agenda.

  • Topic to be discussed ( make this the title of the issue )
  • I would like to demonstrate the power of Polycephaly under different development situations and how Polycephaly can not only save time, but z/OS resources
  • Details or background
  • Polycephaly is working on the new infrastructure and I would like to demo the project to the committee
  • Actions or feedback from the TAC

Please also note you must be available to lead this discussion on a TAC meeting. Calendar of TAC meetings is at https://lists.openmainframeproject.org/g/omp-technical/calendar.

  • Why do you want to be an ambassador?
I've spent my entire career (more than 3 decades) as an I.T. professional working with mainframes and remain very passionate about this platform despite the rumors or its impending demise. The introduction of Zowe - the first EVER Open Mainframe Project for z/OS gave all Mainframers an opportunity to become a part of a greater community while making history. As a Zowe Ambassador I'd love the opportunity to help all I.T. professionals understand the importance of the platform, how it has continually transformed to meet the needs of customers, demystify any concerns associated with "Open Source" and welcome them to the project.

  • Bio
I am a senior technical staff member in the IBM Systems division working on Project Zowe. I am part of the Zowe Leadership Committee and the IBM Zowe architect, having been involved with Zowe since its inception where I remain an active contributor and committer. As part of the Zowe onboraders squad I have presented on Zowe at a number of conferences, both in-person and virtual, ranging from open source summit, Share, Z Tech University, Guide Share meetups, Open Mainframe Summit, and more. As well these larger conferences I also present 1:1 with customers as well as more intimate smaller user group meetups, for example in 2020 during the pandemic I presented on Zowe at virtual user group meetups spanning Australia, Turkey, China, France, and Denmark. I have always enjoyed open source tools and prior to working on Zowe I was a committer and team lead of the Eclipse.org open source Data Bindings and Visual Editor project as well as IBM's commercial Eclipse mainframe platform the IBM z/OS Explorer Aqua. Prior to Eclipse I worked on Java Standard Edition where I was IBM's representative on the Java community process and helped to create a number of open source Java specification requests.

  • Why do you want to be an ambassador?
I love open source projects and I believe they are having a very transformative effect on helping modernize the mainframe by pulling together ISVs, customers old and new, as well as mainframers old and new. Project Zowe excites me as it's making progress in areas that previous attempt failed and I believe it has a great future ahead of it for open source and the z platform and its customers.

Open z/OS Enrollment WG approval

I propose we consider forming a new Open Source community dedicated to building tools and configuration enabling such an environment for those willing to dedicate both hardware and scarce z/OS system programmer resources to such an effort.

I suggest we have a discussion about this idea on the next OMP TAC meeting, this coming Thursday. I solicit your feedback to refine the proposal.

Problem Statement: The GenevaERS OMP Project gives a good example of the impediments experienced exploring z/OS, and developing new Open Source solutions. The historically very well controlled z/OS environments, typically only available to users within some formally defined organization, works against the need to allow new team members, new configuration, evolving requirements required for an open source community.

This need goes beyond just open source communities; existing z/OS consultants need similar capabilities to explore new software configurations, develop exploratory training capabilities and integration approaches to solve new problems, and make recommendations to existing customers. Those new to the environment have similar needs.

Various organizations today have offered z/OS resources for open source communities. One senses that a key resource in these efforts is system programmer time. In the aging resource market for z/OS skills, system programmers are a much smaller set. But these resources are at the center of what is needed to enable many aspects of the above.

Preliminary Vision: Fundamentally, hardware capable of running z/OS is needed. This effort would not target that need, but recognizes that there are some organizations willing to dedicate some capacity to these efforts. If dedicating resources were easier while continuing to be highly controlled, more may be willing to do so.

What if organizations had the ability to download tools and configuration to automate a z/OS public cloud offering. They would want to be able to control, for example:

  • Classes of users, by geography or other measures
  • What software might be installed
  • The types and numbers of lpars
  • When the system would be available

Next Steps: I recommend a discussion at the December OPM Technical Advisor Committee (TAC) meeting about this proposal, to consider forming an exploratory committee for a new OMP project, bringing together parties that have a sense of:
(1) the needs for system programmer automation, to enable the above
(2) Interests and concerns of owners of Z hardware who might be willing to consider assisting in this space
(3) knowledge of IBM z/OS cloud initiatives and how this effort might be complementary
(4) Actual OMP project experiences to date.

Enabling GitHub Actions for OMP Hosted projects

This issue is for tracking the use of GitHub Actions as a CI environment for OMP hosted projects. There is significant momentum in using GitHub Actions in open source as it's tied well into GitHub itself, and the @thelinuxfoundation RE team has been doing work on enabling Z remote builders.

Initial aim is to POC for Feilong, but also look at for Polycephaly ( @edge05 ).
